Ok... so I have been trolling on these boards for about 3 years now, so its time for my first post.
I've had a Prelude since late 2003, and have done very little to it, other than manage to get an exhaust valve STUCK into piston #2 (very nasty backfire incident, when playing with fuel mixtures that I shouldn't have) and ran into a parked toyota with noone in the my drivers seat (pulling the radio out with the car running is a terrible idea)
Anyhoo, I've been doing a bit of homework, and there is a nice JHMBB615-XC sitting in the junkyard here, 48k miles, near torn in half from a rollover, that I can buy for $1200. From the looks of it, the tranny, engine, and most of the other important parts for the swap seem to be in working order.
The question is, which would be a better idea:
1) use my known good engine, with the tranny from the SH
2) use the engine and tranny from the SH, that I have no clue if it works, and will have to swap pistons (it has a crappy turbonetics t3/4 turbo, so I'm assuming it has 12:1 pistons)
Is the actual H22A4 from the SH any different? to me, it looks to be identical on the outside...
Also, considering that I'll be swapping to a manual... will the ECU from an SH work with a non-sh engine?
I have read through a few of the engine swap faq's, and I've done a few in the past (mostly on big block chevy's, but still,,,,)
Considering that 90% of the parts I will need will be coming from the SH, and will be doing all of the work myself (with a hand here and there for the big stuff), will I likely have any other costs, other than the 1200 for the clip from the junkyard?
BTW: Reason for the swap, is simple... I've heard some terrible horror stories about the h22a4 auto tranny when it hits 100k miles, and don't really wanna see it happen first hand. EDIT: Also, the fact that it is an automatic has been my dirty little secret for the past 5 years, but in that time, I've grown very fond of the car, and made hundreds of "customizations", that I really don't wanna see go.
The SH has a different block layout and I'm pretty sure 5speed swapping with an SH tranny will not work since you need the ATTS system. What would be best is a base 5spd transmission.
Options 1 and 2 will not work you need option 3 or 4
3) Buy base transmission and all 5spd swap related parts
4) Sell car and buy 5spd Prelude

The H22a4 is identical in both models, it's the transmissions that are different. Do you plan on doing a street, auto-x, or drag build? Or just a modest daily driver?
ECUs are not interchangable with the two models. You can probably get someone to reflash that tho.
And the pistons in the turbo engine would be lower compression than stock because the turbo increases the compression so by putting 12:1 pistons in with a turbo would = big bang unless some serious building was done
I think your best bet would be to sell the car and get a complete 5th gen like said above
^The engine block is different between the SH and Base. Also he will not be able to re-flash this type of ECU, as that is something to be done with a K series.
I would bet the turbo engine has stock internals since it is most likely a bolt on turbo kit. Like you said the no way it's 12:1 considering US H22 never had those and I doubt someone would try to add those in a turbo build.
For the most part, the car is a daily driver, and has been for quite awhile. I just like the ability to show off now and again, when a collage kid with a stock srt4 pulls up next to me, and would like to extend that ability to stock vettes.

Sorry bud, there is no way you can take srt-4s and vettes in the Prelude. Even a well-built turbo would have trouble with that.
