Questions regarding timing belt replacement

Hello,

I am in the process of replacing the timing belt on my 01 Prelude and just wanted to know what else do you guys recommend replacing at the same time. I plan on replacing the following:

Water Pump
Timing Belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
Balance Shaft Belt
Balance Shaft Tensioner

Is there any other parts that you guys would recommend replacing at the same time?

Do the manual conversion swap. I think its $90 or so worth of parts. There's tons of threads on it

Can the dealer do the manual tensioner swap or is that something you have to do?

make sure you get the newer auto tensioner with the updated part number and you should be gravy.

since it isn't OEM on the lude they probably won't do it. Get a competent mechanic to do your tbelt, probably better chance of them agreeing to do the manual tensioner swap.

Hey,

Thanks for clarifying. I am new to the Prelude and was unaware of the issues with the auto-tensioners until you posted this. My Prelude has 80000 miles on it with the original TB so I am eager to get it replaced. I have read the life for the TB on the 5th gen's is about 60-70k miles. I just read about the auto tensioners rattling, which is interesting because my Lude has a rattle noise at 1500 rpm's only when it is warmed up. I am willing to bet its probably the auto tensioner.

Once again thanks everyone for the insight, this is exactly the type of information I was looking for.

Regards,
Tyler

^^yeah, the T-belts are supposed to be changed every 90K+ miles not every 60-70K dude, thats a little paranoid. And there have been quite a few gutsy/stupid people that come one this forum and have 120K and say"what, really, at 90k miles huh?" I better get that done...(and while most of us are smaking our foreheads).

The reason I thought it was 60-70 is because I looked up the maintenance schedule for the Prelude on Honda's website and it states:

100,000 km (60,000 miles): Replace Timing Belt & Inspect Water Pump if regularly driven in very low temp (-29 C, -20 F)

The car did drive a few winters here so I thought I should play it safe.
