question (weird ass noise coming from car)

ok well first off ive been hearing this whistling type of noise for awhile but i ignored it. Now im starting to hear this sound more and more often, ive heard it a couple of times while the car was on but I mainly hear it when the car has been off for some time. Ive tried recording the noise with my camera but it wont pick up the noise, all i know is that its coming from the engine bay and the noise kinda goes like vrrrrrrrrrrr and lasts just a few seconds till it fades away. I remember the noise starting after I accidentally went off a curb (it was ****ing dark as hell and the car scrapped pretty hard), could I have possibly ****ed up the suspension or something?

appreciate any help/hints you guys can give me on what this noise could possibly be / what is causing it. (the car never made this noise when i bought it btw)

car is a 01 base

ty!

*edit*, also when im getting off the freeway and start downshifting/braking my steering wheel starts to shake left and right. could i have ****ed up the alignment on my car?

Ok so I also have an 01 base model, and I too have noticed the same problems. My car was also shaking and kind of bouncing rapidly from left to right only when I applied the brakes and on the interstate when I got up to about 65-75 mph. All other times it was fine, just a little bit of a bumpy ride. I noticed all of this after I installed my new rims and tires (17x7's).
So the first thing I did was took it to the shop and had an alignment done, which was a waste of $60, because they told me that it didn't need one, infact the alignment looked great. But they did say that there was a bounce in one of my new rims, just a little bent spot or something which was making it jump and vibrate a little more than it should. They balanced it, put that one on the back, and told me I needed new brake pads. So I changed the pads and now the shaking is to a very minimum.
As for the wierd noise, my car does the same thing, but I only notice it when the car is turned off and i'm outside beside it or something. Is it kind of like a loud humming coming from under the hood that lasts for a second or two? I've never looked into what it could be. I just thought it was the factory alarm or something electronic like that. I kind or started to think it was supposed to do that since its been doing it since I purchased the car 2 years ago. Anyway hope this helps. If you find out what that noise is, let me know. -Mike

LOL my car does the same thing. cars off and been sitting for awhile and i go out there and here this sound like a cell phone is vibrating under the hood. im pretty dumbfounded because it wont stay on long enough to track it. it did it once when i had my head under there and sounded like it was coming from around the cruise control actuator area. ::

damn thats weird as hell. the steering wheel thing i believe is my alignment (i havnt had it done in awhile). but when it comes to that noise i have no clue what it is, and yeah the sound is a humming noise and does only last a few seconds. I mainly hear it when I am in the garage doing something and out of nowhere my car will make that funky noise.

I was thinking about taking it to a shop to get it checked out, but since you guys have the same problem I am starting to think its something normal.

Can anyone who has actually figured out what this noise is post whats causing it?

Thanks....

Try disconnecting the battery and see if it still does that. I never noticed my '97 SH do that, however, the sounds that's described seems similar to the sound your anti-lock breaks make when they engage. Is that a good way to describe it?

yeah thanks for the info Glaucus. I will have to give that a try, ive never had to disconnect the battery before so will that reset any thing in the car? (i.e cdplayer.. i have some code for it somewhere in my manual).

btw why would the anti-lock brakes engage if the car is off? anyways thanks...if anyone else has any more info on what this could be post!

I dont see how they would engage. If you disconnect your battery you need that code and you may have to reset your idle.

nah, I didn't think it was the ABS kicking in, just trying to get a good feel for the sound. And as for the battery, yeah, you'd need to re-enter your radio's security code. Not sure how you'd reset the idle or that it's even necessary.

Its necessary if it doesnt idle right. You rev to 3000 RPM till the cooling fans come on and then let the car idle for about 5 min. Its dumb but it works.
