Q: Mobil 1 oil filter

I've recently switched to synthetic and I've been using the Honda OEM oil filter but after reading some topics about oil filters I decided to get the Mobil 1 since it was highly recommended with the synthetic application.

I got mine from autozone and I don't think the guy gave me the right filter (M1-104). That's what showed up on their system. I wanted to make sure its the right one because its shorter than OEM and a lil wider. The guy said as long as the threads and spring is correct the shape of the filter doesn't matter. So I thought I'd ask here. Help would be appreciated.

So is this the right filter? M1-104

You got the one that is considered OEM replacement. If you want the larger volume, 'oversized' filter, you would want M1-105.

What would be the benefit of using an oversized filter?

More filter area so the filter can remove more foreign particles before the filter needs to be replaced. Though sometimes this also causes a larger oil pressure drop. That being said, I'm using a Ford Motorcraft filter that's around 3-4x the size of an OEM Honda filter. I still get very good oil pressure readings.

More filter area means better flow. The oil pressure only drops when you are measuring pressure before the filter. After the filter you will see an increase with increased flow.

FWIW if you are serious about racing I would not use the Mobil 1 filter (any of them). The pressure drop due to the more restrictive media, comparing comparable-sized filters, is significant.

I didn't know that about the Mobil 1 filters. Todd, do you think it's a bad idea to use this filter on a JRSC motor? I don't race the car, but I do drive it hard every day.

Thanx for all the replies everyone. I bought the filter after reading about it from NTPOG and since I'm also using Mobil 1 synthetic I figured what better filter to use than the same brand. So I'm giving it a try.

My car is a daily driver but come summer will be a weekend autocrosser as well. So what filter would be recommended with the Mobil 1 synthetic? Please give part# as well, thanx

Try Wix filters found at OReilly's (sp?) The part # is 51334, or if you want the oversized one, I think it's #51344, but you will have to place order for the oversized
