problem when vtec rpm level reached..

The other day I saw a puff of grey exaust come from my prelude while i was driving down the highway. The next day when i pushed the car to reach vtec, as soon as i hit enough RPM for the vtec to kick in the vtec level got extremly loud while jerking the car like it was skipping, with little power. It did this all 5 or 6 times i did it. Today i drove the car into vtec and the vtec was working fine, but there was a ton of grey exaust coming from the tailpipe. I kept doing this as the exaust smoke was getting less and less. Now there is no exaust smoke at all and everything seems to be working fine??
Does anybody have any idea what the problem may be, very weird to me. I was thinking it may be catalytic converter, but i just had a new one installed a few months ago.

Silly question, but have you checked your oil level?
