=== Potenza S-03 Pole position VS Toyo Proxes T1-S ===

Hi,

I'm happy the site is back online !

I want to upgrade my 5th gen Prelude tires from Bridgestone Potenza RE92 to something better. I hesitate between Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position or Toyo Proxes T1-S.

I want a sticky tire that is also good in the rain to prevent hydroplaning. I tried to compare them on tirerack.com but they don't know the Toyo company. The design of the T1-S seems more effective to prevent hydroplaning but the S-03 is supposed to be very good at this.

I would like to know how those tires compare in traction and handling, and I would also like to know the price for those Toyo tires.

Thank you for your future feedback !

Both have great bite in dry and wet.

Biggest difference is SO-3 has sharp turn-in and TI-S has slowish turn-in. Toyo also has smoother ride.

The Toyos are around 150 a pop.

I've had both tires on my 5th gen lude... go with the T1S... for the money, you'll end up buying a tire that you won't really use to it's full potential...

Here is my review on the S03...

Good luck!

i got the so2s they arent bad. i think the t1's will have a much harders sidewall so in turns it wont be as effective. i havent tried my so2s in the rain yet but i bet they will do fine vs stock

It was one of the best investments I've made for my car in getting Potenza S-03's. Of course I'm coming from the RE92's. The differences I've noticed, much better grip, outstanding performance in the rain, and great track runs in autocrossing. The noise, honestly I think it is quieter, but who knows.

Actually, the T1S have a softer sidewall...

Thank you guys for your feedback !

From your comments, I understand that the S-03 is quieter and has better traction and handling than the T1-S.

But I am also concerned by the tire's capacity to resist hydroplaning, so do you know how they compare about water evacuation?

My feeling is the T1-S has direct grooves to evacuate water so it might do that job better than the S-03 but I'm not a tire expert !

generally, you get what you pay for. i would go with the so-3's. if not, then thye so-3's, pilots, etc...are the biggest rip-off's in tires.

Both tires are good in the wet... but the T1S is a more comfortable ride and quieter too since the sidewall is softer.

If I had to put my money on which performed better in the rain, I would say the S03 but the price difference is a lot between the 2. Besides, how often are you driving in the rain?

$138 per S-03 at www.tirerack.com for the 205/50/16 size

in my book, that's not expensive at all.

Well, the S-03 have wider grooves, that evacuate large amount of water. I've driven on them in the pouring rain during a trip from San Diego back to L.A. on the 15 fwy. There was very light traffic and I was going about 70mph and felt no sign of hydroplaning. Also, it was raining at the auto-x practice last Saturday. My buddy in a E30 M3 drove my car, and he told me that my tires had more response than his BFG G-force KD in the rain. After the event, my car was the dirtiest one and I think it was due to the large amount of water/dirt being evacuated by the tires.

Anyway, I have my vote on the S-03 for sure.

I had T1s's and I loved them! They gripped good on wet and dry pavement. Now I have parradas and they suck, there is no comparison.

T1-s are very nice. I just got mine and they grip well.
in cold weather they are not good for obvious reasons, but that is like all z rated tires. In the rain they have been great as well.

I also noticed that I cannot chirp second gear as easily! The car just keeps pulling!

They are great for the money.

I have the S-03s in 215/45/17. And they are dead quiet at low speed or on the highway. They are as quiet as stock RE-92s if not more quiet...

Grip on dry is awesome and they have been just as impressive in the rain. I have about 300mi on mine so far...

I have 3 track days and 700 highway miles on my S-03s, about 1k total. One of the track days was in the rain. These tires are awesome in the wet. The only car I couldn't catch and pass was a WRX with S-03s. They are quiet as anything and the ride is superb. Also the S-03 is one of, if not the largest tire per size available. Meaning a S-03 225 width tire is wider than most all other 225 width tires, R compounds excluded. I was going to go with P Zeros but as my long time trusted sales rep told me they last longer, perform better at the limit and are a better riding tire. If you have a dual purpose car with only one set of wheels the S-03 is the way to go.

The 1st generation Paradas lacked grip (sticky rubber)... they used a new compound this year calling it the series II Parada... Just make sure you get the series II and not the 1st generation.

Hi everyone !

Thank you for your impressions about those tires. I asked a compagny specialized in selling tires and here is what they said:

Traction: S-03 and T1-S are similar
Handling: S-03 and T1-S are similar
Hydroplaning resistance: S-03 is better
treadwear: S-03 will last a little longer

He also said S-03 had a special design to keep good wet traction while the tire wears. I will try the S-03 because, for me, tires are as important as shoes. And, like Vin Diesel will say in "The Fast and The Furious 2" :

"When you drive a Prelude in twisties, the only thing between you and death is your tires"
