Let this be a lesson for future nooblets. Don't buy cars that aren't thoroughly inspected.

cylinder 2 could also not be fireing right due to the oil......id replace the gaskets, plugs, wires, and test again.......check the cap and button while youve got the wires off and make sure your getting the spark you need.

OP: also consider cleaning out your egr ports and valve while you have everything apart. It'll save you the headache later down the road just as the cam seal that someone else previously mentioned.

perhaps instead of putting all this money into fixing the engine opt for a jdm swap instead? thats what i did and never looked back

Down load the Helms manual and start troubleshooting. Sounds to me like you could turn this car into a class project.

Find out what is EXACTLY what is wrong then make a plan to fix it correctly.

I grow impatient with throwing the "JDM engine swap" card as the answer to every problem a 5th gen ever has.

sorry about the rant, been a rough week.

As I mentioned - clean your EGR ports and EGR valve - that may/may not fix the issues with the misfire's.

as for the vtec issue - try checking the vtec solenoid gasket. Sometimes the small metal filter on the inside gets clogged and you need to clean or replace that as well. If you still have an issue afterwards - check your oil pressure switch

idle air control system - try cleaning the Idle air control valve (also on the intake manifold

be sure to replace your spark plugs AFTER you have cleaned the ports etc - start the car and let it run for a few minutes so any extra cleaner gets out of the system, then let it all cool down - reset the ecu and install the new plugs.

If you're 100% positive you have bad compression and may have some bad rings - start by looking into that. (remove the head to inspect/ however your teacher wants to go about it etc.)

Cleaning the egr ports and all that other fun stuff thats located on the intake manifold will be alot easier once that's out of the car.

lastly - if you continue to have misfire's - consider new spark plug wires/ check the condition of your dizzy

Once you've reset the ecu after cleaning everything and put the motor back together (if you end up removing the head to inspect the compression issue) some of the CEL's (if any remain) wont come back right away and may take driving the car for a few days to see them again. Then it's time for more troubleshooting!

- That's everything and anything I can think of in regards to those CEL's

^^ do this. With 168k on the odo ur egr ports will need cleaned reguardless....with all the codes being registered on the ecu looks like egnition. Your getting enough compression for the motor to run even if one piston has blow by the rest are still ok. Id also drain and refill the coolant to make sure its not a head gasket causing the compression issue.

thanks for all of your help.. Ive got it up here at school today. I changed the plugs and it made it up here. So we are going to start to pull the motor out today. Is there anything that i definitly will need when ever i put it back in, like brakets or bolts that break easy? When you say EGR ports do mean where the vacuum lines go in. Thanks again for all your help. Where can i find OEM gaskets online??

When you remove the old egr ports - be sure to have new ones ready. You need to get them from a Honda dealer. Sorry but I don't have the part number atm. If Mike pops in here again - he probably knows it off the top of his head.

Sorry I don't as it has been years. It was on another site until I deleted it when I left as they didn't deserve the info any longer and I wanted no part of the site so I took away what I gave them.

You have to get them from Honda..they are only like 40 cents each.. You need 6. I got 16 so I had enough for another cleaning and extra in case i screwed up.

The new port plugs dont look the the old ones. The old ones are solid brass, the new ones are hollow (aluminum or steel)

The new port plugs are Honda Part # 17199-PT3-AHM

thanks guys i just got the motor and transmissions out yesterday it took about four hours to get it all figured out. The only mount that gave us a problem was the driverside mount. everything else went pretty smooth. I towed the car back home after. what is the best aftermarket suspension for the money. im not tring to lower it any, i just want a smoother ride. i diffinitley have to replace all the ball joints and B rear lower control arms.

The skunk2 intake manifold does not have the ability to hook up any of the EGR sensors etc used on the stock intake manifold or the euro-R manifold. - So yes, you would be lacking some of the parts for emissions.

You have to watch what pistons you use because of the FRM sleeves we have within the block. I can't really give much more information besides that - searching around and someone else's input would help for this one lol

Stock headgaskets are typically good enough.
