Just out of curiosity, Does this have anything to do with the infamous "5th-gear-grind"? (cause I heard it affects reverse too)...and on last question, how do you get the oil into that hole, cause it looks sideways to me, and im not sure if gravity works that way ?

Thats a fair point on the oil. And yeah I have to admit my car did get a good grind in 5th about 10 mins before i found the prob with reverse and i was thinking maybe that was the problem, could this have caused any major damage in the box?

Yes, there is the possibility of long term damage. This only happens when you push hard on the shifter, and you can bend your shift forks this way. It is very important for users not to push hard going into reverse, or else you may cause this problem.

I know that marcucci (not really around anymore) rebuilt more than one gearbox in Texas because of this problem.

Make that several gearboxes.

The 5th gen had an improperly made shift fork that was recalled, and also changed the design of the 5th syncrho hub. I'm not sure why this didn't apply to the 4th gen, but AFAIK it didn't. I've only every seen 5th gens with the 5th gear grind.

The 5th gear synchro has to function properly to use reverse as if it won't move right you can't engage reverse. The 5th gear grind, when it gets bad, damages the 5th gear synchro sleeve such that it won't move right when hot, and eventually, at all into reverse.

If you grind a few times (such as not clutching right) it's probably nothing to worry about. If you grind every time (i.e. the 5th gear synchro is bad) then you should replace the synchro. Reverse and then eventually 5th will eventually "go out".

If caught early it's a $100 synchro set for the 5th gear, if you wait, you can chew up 5th gear (another $80) and possibly the reverse idler gear ($50) and in an extreme case, the 1-2 synchro set which include the countershaft reverse gear ($275!!!). Those are parts only- expect to spend at least 4-6 hours of labor on R&R of the tranny from the car and then another 3-6 hours for the transmission work itself. These are not cheap repairs.

Keep in mind that a brand-spanking new tranny from Honda, with everything in it and on it, is $1700 before shipping from Majestic. Something to consider if you are looking at a few synchros, gears, bearings, and seals. A rebuild of an even mildly abused tranny will run you more than $1k in parts and labor, before taking it out or putting the tranny back in the car.

Cheers Marcucci, just one question: is it normal for the 5th gear to grind when you go from 2nd to 5th at high rpm?(ive done this accidently once or twice, the clutch was in through the whole shift though)

That is how I broke the trans on my 5th gen. It would not go in to reverse after repeated max rpm in 2nd and missed 3rd, between 3rd and 5th, with a grind. This destroys the 5th gear, syncro and slider, preventing shift into reverse. I also replaced all the shift forks, but they looked ok.

My note on the bag says 3rd, it is really 5th syncro set.

The above poster is incorrect on the total cost of parts needed to repair this problem. ~ $175 + $20 shipping. I did the labor myself.
