Please HELP My manual SiR Lude wont go into reverse!!

I was driving my prelude today and went to park and trying to reverse into the park proved a real problem, it simply refuses to let the reverse gear engage. If you put it into the reverse notch as far as it goes then attempt to reverse it just spits it back out and goes nowhere!! Someone please help me, i love this car and dont want to see it scrapped!!!!

Time to have your auto rebuilt or replaced sounds like. The autos are synonymous with failure.

Mine was having problems with reverse when it died one of the times.

Try this If you go to put it in reverse and it wont let you:

Put the shifter back to neutral position, let off clutch, press clutch in, then try to put it in reverse.

Just had a go with engine off and it went into reverse and then I tried with the engine on and it reversed fine but when i put it back into neutral and lifted my foot off the clutch it started making grinding noises in neutral and these noises got worse when I moved the gear stick

It was grinding in neutral?

You might have a shift cable problem.

I had a problem with mine not wanting to go into reverse and fix price was like 1600, so I looked at the cables from the top and put some grease on my fingers and greased the cables as best I could and it goes into reverse now.

yes i was extremely worried about this way back about a month after i bought my prelude, it would occur at random and just be the biggest pain in the ass ever, after i finally convinced it to go into reverse after a few days it would be gone for about a month then be right back, i took it to a shop and they gave it back saying they have no idea what was wrong ill have to take it to a transmission specialist, well they managed to get it into reverse while they had it and since then somehow it has been fixed... never found a problem or anything, once you finally get it in reverse let me give you a very good piece of advice, park your car in reverse EVERY stop, i believe it may have just been the fact that every start up the car used the reverse motion, "warming it up" but whatever the deal i no longer have to park it in reverse and have never had it lock out on me since, i really wish someone had a thread about this with a fix back then

Ive just got the car home today after having the AA roadside rescue coming to check the car outside my school and my Dad who has alot more mechanical background than myself checked it out and found it needed hydraulic clutch oil changed, so after having that changed and lubricating the linkages its working great. Oh and ive got one more question: where do i check/refill the gearbox lubricant should i need to?

There should be a dipstick at the transmission (passengers side of the engine).

Oh wait I'm thinking of the auto again

You'll have to open up the drain bolt to re-check it. There is also a breather/filler hole on the top.

EDIT: Someone may have a scan of the Helms page on this: 13-3

It's at a 90 degree angle right above the fill line.
