Picking up older car.. Somewhat worried about the engine down the road

Hi everybody! I'm new here, as well as new to this type of forum, so please correct me if I'm breaking etiquette or anything.

I love the prelude and i have an opportunity to pick one up. The only thing is that it has 140k miles. It looks as though its been very well taken care of but obviously i am worried about how well its going to run. Specifically i am worried about the engine and how strong it is. i know they run for a long time but still.

So basically, i need to know, what would go wrong with an old engine like that? Is there any way i can make it run as strong as it did when it was new? I want to upgrade things too, like pistons, maybe cams and the like but i dont know where to start. If worst comes to worst, i would be ok just replacing the stuff thats there with new OEM parts, but will that make the engine run like new again?

ALSO! i would definitely entertain the idea of swapping a new h22a into it. If a new one exists. Does it? a slightly used one wouldnt be the end of the world either, just want to make sure i dont mess up.

Thanks a lot for any help, im pretty handy, just never needed to do engine work really.

Remember, this isn't 1968 - 140K miles on today's engines esp a Honda is nothing. Test drive it, look at maintenance records, take it to an independent mechanic for an evalution and that should help make your decisions.

That's kinda what I was thinking. However, later on when it had 240k miles, are there engines that are available that I'll be able to swap in? Does anyone make a new h22a engine?

140k is not that bad at all man, seriously.

If its taken care of it will be good to go. Remember that ALL H22 engines consume oil, its just the rate of consumption you care about.

i wouldnt worry to much with 140k.....as long as its clean and looks taken care of.....pull the dip stick and check color of oil and smell.....check the plugs n wires and pull the air filter box off and see if its been changed..before you run the car and while its cold check the coolant in the radiator and the overflow bottle(pay attention to color honda coolants blue and if you see any black crap in there could be an issue)......also look for factory paint spots on all major bolts and check and see if any of them have been wrenched on and cross reference it with any maintenance records that are given to you. Is it an SH or Base? or an automatic?

first of all what year is the Lude? Is it auto or manual?

140k is nothing like the mates said. People have cars with 200k on them and they run like new. It'd how you take care of the car and what you do to it that matters.

Do not start replacing old parts with new OEM parts. You are wasting your time. The rule everyone knows is "If it aint broken don't fix it"

If you are so concerned about mileage, then yeah you can find a nice JDM motor with 50k on it. Make sure you research this and find a good provider. There are many JDM engine dealers out there that straight up suck, rip people off and sell crap!!! I wont mention any names, but these mofos know who they are.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay here!!!

Sorry, I was wrong, it's a 99... Ha I feel kinda dumb now. But to be fair I was only looking at it ha. And it's a stick of course. Wouldn't even entertain the idea of an auto. Everything on the entire car is stock and it looks real nice. Apparently it has hit something because the front bumper is new (but factory and obviously done right). I'm taking it to a mechanic tomorrow to have it checked out because I don't trust myself ha. it's also a base with the red top motor. Seems like the kind of car I'm gonna keep indefinitely. Thanks for your help guys. I'll probably run some sea foam through it and have some fun!
Great site btw. Favorite forum I've found so far.

make sure to do a compression test. Check for any leaks, any tiny sippage etc. Check timing. Was timing belt ever replaced? I suppose it has been at least once.

when was last tune up?
