I just picked up a 2001 Prelude SH. The car is stock internally with the only upgrades being an AEM V2 and an HKS exhaust. It has 104k on it and is in very good cosmetic condition.
First thing I did was had the oil replaced with Pennzoil Ultra 10w30 and a K&N filter. I noticed a small amount of oil consumption. I took the car into the dealer to have the timing belt service performed and he found one of the cam seals leaking which is being replaced.
I noticed when the oil was changed with the Pennzoil Ultra the idle changed noticeable for the better. Very smooth very quiet. I have about a 1,000 mile road trip and plan on changing the oil again at the end of the run. Anyone have any long term experience with Pennzoil Ultra? I am sold on synthetic so I don't have any plans to use dino oil in it. Preferences between Ultra, PP or M1. I've heard good things about 0w40 Mobil 1....
5W-30 Mobil1 is good, it's what I use, using a wider viscosity range oil is only advantageous when driving in racing conditions. I use Honda filter's with mine since I work there and it's just cheap and easy that way for me.

My reason for trying the Pennzoil Ultra was its "hyper-cleaning" additive package. Not knowing what the previous owner used or how often he really changed out the oil I decided to give it a try. I don't believe in doing engine flushes so I thought I would use a high quality synthetic put about 1,500 miles on it then change it. Go up to about 3,500 on the next run then change it and maintain my normal 4,500-5,000 mile change interval.
I'm using K&N filters. I usually use 5w30 but didn't see it as a big deal right now I'm in Georgia and it hasn't been under 90 degrees in the last 2 weeks. I may stick with the Ultra we'll see.
5w30 honda synthetic blend!!!! never hurts to get to know the ppl at honda ither i wouldnt use penzoil....craps junk n burns quicker than your cars supposed to need the oil changed.
Mobil, Valvoline, and Castrol synthetic oils do their job well to work against wear and viscosity breakdown over time. I would personally stay away from Pennzoil.
Anyone try the Valvoline V2 racing oil they have out now? They offer in synthetic or conventional. I'm contemplating trying it my next oil change. I'm currently using Valvoline Maxlife synthetic blend.

I've been told that the K&N are no better than a Fram filter...just cost a lot more cause it has K&N on it.
As for oil..I've been using Mobil 1 Advanced 5W-30 . Have had no problems other than the usual H22 Oil Consumption.
Actually after reading through all that none of the part #'s apply to Honda filters anymore but at least you can look at some of the higher quality ones.

Awesome! Thanks for this. Looks like I'm gonna try the Mobile 1 Oversized.
Well I have 2 spare Honda filters but I'd rather use them than cut them open so next time I change my oil I'm gonna clean and cut open the used one to see what it's like on the inside cause that page is outdated on Honda filters.

I just think it's funny how when I searched on this I have seen a lot of people say that Fram is the worst and to avoid them. Maybe this is just more for the performance applications vs. regular street driving...because just about everyone I know uses Fram filters and this is the first I have heard them referred to as junk.
