painting calipers ... already read FAQ

Is it better to actually remove the brake calipers to paint them or should I leave them on the car like most people did? If I leave them on the car, should I remove the pads and pivot the caliper away from the rotor? Do you paint just the caliper or do you paint the caliper bracket, too? I imagine the bracket too since it looks like part of the caliper once reassembled. Thanks.

ps: I just got my Helm today. Did anyone else have the urge to go disassemble their entire car?

hey when i painted mines, we removed the caliper & pads. the helm's manual rocks, it really came in handy when i took the interior apart for sound insulation.

I just painted mine a few weeks ago.

For the fronts, i removed the lower caliper bolt, took out the pads, and covered up the rotor. I primered both caliper and bracket at the same time, but then cover up the bracket, and sprayed the caliper one color, and let it sit after 3 coats of paint for an hour, then cover it up and sprayed the bracket. Then put the pads in, and put the bolt back in. There was some over spray on the rotor, but after a few stops it goes away. Make sure you cover up your car as well. Over spray goes everywhere, so you want to play it safe.

the rear calipers and bracket will seperate easier, so i took off the brackets and sprayed them on paper, while leaving the rear calipers on the car, and sprayed them. Then reinstalled after both were dry.

My only problem was the horrific break squeel after re-installing everything. On of those damn dust shields must be rubbing the rotor some where.

I was kind of nervous doing this myself because I had no clue on how to remove calipers and what not. I purchased some brake caliper paint from pep boys (red of course but can't remember the brand). The process went like this. Jacked the car up, removed wheels, newspapered a good half of the car (and around the calipers in detail), cleaned the calipers, shot them with a couple of coats, and let it dry all night! That was it and after 6 months, not a bit of peeling or cracking.
