No need, you don't lose any engine oil when removing any auto and manual transmission from any car, you're friend is retarded. Don't know why you'd waste money on rebuilding that trans, it will just fail again, first generation triptronic technology FTL, but all autos fail, just a matter of time.

Your friend may have misunderstood the word "oil" to mean tranny "oil." I've heard people use it in the same context as tranny "fluid." If he did actually mean motor oil then, yes, he is mentally challenged and do not ever ask him for car advice! So it really won't matter when you change your motor oil, before or after the tranny rebuild.

As far as the TIPtronic (not TRIPtronic) trans, the history is very bad and documented but I can say I bought a 2000 for my son this past Summer w/ 188K on it and it performs flawlessly. It did throw CEL codes P0700 and 0740 a few weeks ago and I decided to change the fluid. I drained over 4 quarts out of it! Some DIP**** seriously overfilled it so I think that was the reason for the CEL. Refilled with the required 2.6 qts of Castrol High Mileage and no probs at all - smooth as silk. I'm hoping I'm one of the few lucky ones. From everything you read you would think that the TT has a 100% failure rate but that is simply not the case.

what is the failure rate of the rebuilds tho? i think that is pretty close to 100%. most people who get rebuilds have to have it done more than once.

True. In that case maybe better to look for a later model used one with a known good history (i.e. private party) vs. rebuild. From the rebuild quotes I've seen a used one is way less $, no?

what about a used one from a 4th gen? would that bolt up? they didn't have the slap stick option and were more reliable.

far as I know, 4th gens have a different auto tranny.

Your best bet is a 5 speed swap or pay to have a built auto.... which is expensive as hell
