OEM EXEDY vs. STAGE 1

My son has a 2000 prelude Type SH. We are going to replace a worn clutch and need help determine which clutch to buy. The engine has no mods other than a short ram intake. Have no plans for any major mods in the future. Maybe a cat back exhaust.

We are looking at the Exedy OEM P.n KHC03 and the Exedy stage 1 P.N 08805. Can anyone let us know the advantages and disadvantages of each. Will one last longer than the other. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am new to the world of Honda's.

I can't speak for longevity, but with the few mods you have/intend to have I 'd say the stock replacement should be plenty. The more heavy duty the clutch the harder it may be to use and chattier it is when letting off.

They are near identical. I thought my OEM exedy was going bad so I ordered an Exedy stage 1 - as far as drive-ability goes, I don't notice a difference...

You can go with either and you would be fine. The engagement point didn't change when I had them swapped - so it feels like I never upgraded....

The only time I can see upgrading a clutch to any stage is if you intend to over a certain whp, which I THINK is around 200-210-ish to the wheels (not crank) and you would want a stage 2 by that point.

BlackTrax - Racing Clutch Sets
best clutch i've had/used so far.

supposed to be long lasting, great feel (i got stage 1 feel, but the kevlar/metallic material so it would last long time)

had act/oem/exedy/clutchmasters in the past.

Exedy clutches are very good products, and like others have said there won't be a large difference between the OEM replacement and a stage 1. you might have a little heavier clutch feel with the stage 1, but it won't be disruptive in driving, in fact, I personally enjoy a slightly heavier clutch.

I don't have any personal experience with the OEM setup, but I do have the Stage 1 Exedy clutch in my car currently. pedal pressure is slightly increased (which IMO is a good thing), and I haven't had any issues, although the clutch is fairly new. clutch grip is excellent, and haven't had any problems with my mild build driven on the track.

keep in mind that with the Type SH, you must remove the ATTS unit which will lead to higher prices if a shop does the work, or a bigger headache if you do the work. if you are doing the work, I highly suggest purchasing a Helms Manual. there are usually a couple floating around the For Sale section.

if you are taking the car in, I would suggest trying to find a good independent Honda mechanic, rather than doing it at the dealership, which due to the ATTS unit being present, would charge you a very high price.

good luck, and welcome to PO! there's a wealth of information on this board, and we're happy to have you here.

Both are made with organic friction material, however the stage one pressure plate has a slightly higher clamp force.
