Odd noise when coming to a stop..

I noticed this last night when driving with the radio off.. as i come to a stop, i hear something coming from the back of the car, sounds like something is rotating, like a tick noise.. its hard to explain.. what should i look for? At first i thought it was the rear wheels.. but i dont think it is? It only happens when slowing to a stop.. not when starting off.

Does the frequency (repetition-wise) of the noise get lower as you stop?

Like this:

TickTickTick.Tick..Tick....Tick......Tick.....Ttii iiicccckkkk?

Probably uneven wear on a rotor or pad...though it could be a bearing or something more serious. My car does this about once a year...it was slid into a curb once, and over time the rotor wears ever so slightly so that it starts making that noise.

Handling and stopping in my car appear unaffected, and it takes 12 months for the noise to come back....but mine is more of a *runk* than a *tick* if that makes sense

yes.. id say the noise slows as i stop.. its alot easier to hear it when the windows are up rather than trying to hear it with windows down... the rear pads are only about 3k miles old.. and the rotors were resurfaced when those were installed. so im not sure what to do. i cant always hear it though.. i kept driving around in front of my house stopping-going... and it seems it only happens when stopping from a higher speed.

thanks
Sean

Could just be a rock(s) in the tread. Happens all the time. As you slow down, the frequency of the rock hitting pavement is more noticible...... under 30 mph.

the shims would be between the pad and caliper- they are thin flat pieces of metal that should be the same size/shape as your pads... (haven't messed w/ the brakes on my lude yet; someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I did rear brakes on my car myself at work. I'm not for sure but I readjusted my parking brake too much and I believe the rotor is warped on the inside for the pads caused from my stupidity pulling it at higher speeds than normal. Oh yeah did you get factory pads installed?

Look at your calipers... First off, double check to make sure there is still pad left (if there is 1/8 inch or less of material left on the pads, it's time to change em). now, look between the pad and the inside edge of the caliper. there should some small, thin pieces of metal between the pads and calipers (shims). these are there to reduce brake sqeaking (they should be lubed before install, otherwise it sqeaks REAL bad). if they are protruding ANYWHERE past the pads, they are not seated properly.

I would suggest taking off the wheel to check out the whole thing (if you haven't already). hope this helps!

Probably your best bet; go back to the place that did it and have them look at it. If it's the brakes, then fine. If not, at least you get a free diagnosis!

it ended up being a pebble stuck between the pads and the rotor... who knows how it got there.. but thats what they said. Free of charge.
