No VTEC when cold...

On my '99 2.2 VTI, I've noticed that if the enigne is cold, it wont vtec. If this a safely feature?

I thought the vtec was mechanical and not electronically controlled. Is it electronic??

it is a safety thing it won't egage until you warm up the car so you don't overstress the engine

D'oh! of course it's electronic! Should have thought more carefully about that question!!

I only had to do it in a emergency when I pulled out of a road end and had to floor it to get out of trouble . I normally would NEVER over rev my engine until it was fully warmed up.

Thanks for the replies

This is true! Leaving a car idling in the spot it has sat in all night is bad for it!

Drive it smooth and carefully until it has warmed up. I use the water temp as a guide. As soon as the needle starts to move I will open it up a bit.

I usually warm the car 1-2 min and then drive the car at or under 3k rpm till it gets to its "normal" temp. Is this ok?

Yes...but i let it idle for about 30 seconds to a minute then drive it under 3K and shift at 3K.
