Hey everybody,
So i need some advice about a few things. I got a 98 sh a week or so before christmas(i don't have any pictures yet). It came in decent shape, survived a trip back to AZ from San Diego, with a few problems from border patrol(apparently the person who owned it before me liked his drugs). It came with a DC header, a no-name cai as far as i can tell, some 17" rims, and some green lowering springs(i think tien). A few days after getting it back, it started leaking oil like crazy. I tried to figure out the problem myself for a week but i'm just getting into all this stuff so i was in over my head. I took it to a mechanic here and had him figure out/fix that problem and also do a general inspection of the entire car.
It turned out that the front balancer shaft was where the leak was coming from, and it also caused a lot of other problems since i guess oil got into some places where it shouldnt have. Well i paid the man a good deal of money and i got my prelude to be driveable again. I also got a list of other stuff that needs to be replaced, some seals and it needs a "general" tune-up. I have the list with all the right names around here but I'm too lazy to dig it out. Also the rear struts are leaking. He said all of it isn't something that i need to deal with right away and to just do them when i get some money.
So on to my questions.
What would be included in this general tune-up? He quoted me about 350 for it, parts and labor and tax included. I was wondering if it was something I could do myself or not? i would like to do a little work on the car myself, start out small you know?
Since the rear struts are leaking i was thinking about just upgrading to some aftermarket struts when i got the money or possibly getting a coilover setup. I hear that koni yellows with ground controls are the best set-up for the money. I was wondering if the koni yellows would work with my current springs?
Any advice and opinions would be great.
Spence

there's a few luders in phoenix i'm sure would help you out with tune up stuff. chaing plugs, wires, dist cap+ rotor are all simple things. not sure if tein perch is different than koni, but it should work. order the shocks 1st and then when you have then take one out and look and see.

Thanks lilredlude, btw. I'll def. have to see about those luders in phoenix.
The main question i would like answered is if tien springs will work with the koni yellows? I will have enough money to buy them in the next week or two so i'd like to find out soon.
I at least thought some certain people would be in here telling me to use the search feature, which i have. I couldn't find anything about tien springs with koni yellows.
So i was just talking to a friend of mine who knows a little more about cars and he said i should check my springs to see if they are real tien's or counterfeits. So now i have to go do that sometime....
If they are i suppose I'll just go big and get the koni/gc setup. It isnt too expensive, i looked and can probably get it all for under 700 shipped?
I have one very newb-ish question though. Are struts and shocks the same thing? If not can someone explain the difference and whether the koni's are struts or shocks?
I would suggest not paying anybody for any service unless you know exactly what is going to be done to the car. You should also research all the parts that will be replaced to find out how much profit this guy is intending to make off of you. That will at least keep him honest. A "tune up" is very general in terms and if it's the standard tune up we all know, it's just a dist. cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs. Shouldn't be over $80 if you're using moderate quality replacements.
most of the phoenix guys have their own prelude site. i forget what it is. check the meet area of here and it'll link to you it maybe. and i think most of them are on pp, not here.
for the shock, buy the konis, then when they get there take out the front shock on your car and see if it looks like it will physically fit on the koni. if it looks like it will continue and take it apart, if it doesn't order new springs. or just take it apart and test fit it, pretty quick process.

Tune up = spark plugs/spark plug wires, dist cap/rotor, air filter, oil change, transmission drain and refill ect... Most importantly NGK NGK NGK NGK NGK! Hopefully you got the point... Good luck and post some pics!

yeah thats pretty much what i thought the tune-up included mostly, but i'm planning on asking the guy when i talk to him tomorrow. i gotta give him a call anyways because tonight my check engine and atts light came on and i want to get it checked out soon and i happen to have time and a ride tomorrow if i need it.
Hey guys so i got the check engine light code: P0401
Says insufficient flow in the exhaust gas reticulation system.
I did a bit of searching and it seems that i should look into cleaning out the egr and ports? is this correct?
also if that is what needs to be done, what do i need to get to do that? and can it be done by someone who has no experience really with working on cars?
