Congrats!
FYI, there were no options for the 5th gen, besides base vs. SH. But damn that's some low mileage.
Oil is personal preference. Honda says use 5-W30 weight, says so right on the oil filler cap. If the previous owner used syn, you might want to continue doing that.
Yes VTEC should work in every gear. I believe it won't work until the engine temp is up to a certain point though. Also, it won't work if the oil level is low.

This is key. The H22 is known to eat oil, especially if you vtec a lot. You should check your oil level every two weeks at minimum. Don't be alarmed if you have to top it off each time.
If the owner was using synthetic @ 54k definitely continue using it. It will keep things cleaner and on a "younger" engine its a good point to start/keep using. 5w-30 is the recommend oil by Honda. Royal Purple is a popular trusted oil.

Pretty low but I've got you beat, bought my car 6 months ago with 36,875 miles, now it has 40k miles.
Congrats on your buy. You're gonna love that car cause I love mine and I think everyone on here has the same feelings for their Lude.
BTW...VTEC doesn't work on engine temperature. It actually works on Oil pressure and RPM. So make sure your oil is top off every so often. Other than that...ask away if you got questions. Enjoy your Prelude
lol there were a couple options like a ash tray instead of the coin thing in center console. lol isnt there a ATTS light or somethin? check the manual? look for type SH sticker or where there used to be a sticker thingy. idiot who had my car last got rid of that stuff and took clear coat with it.
lol bingo. enjoy your car man, i went from a 96 Accord LX (no vtec =c) and i love my new ride. easy off on the vtec and WOT, burn oil and foul your plugs quick like that.
Do you have a light mounted to the inside of your door panel?

That can foul your plugs? I mean...I don't to either of them at all, but still, I thought that something has to be mechanically wrong with your engine for your plugs to foul.
