New Distributor Bouncing Tach

Hey all,

I just replaced my distributor on my 2001 SH to get rid of the reoccurring CEL 9. Now that I have replaced it, everything runs great except after 5k RPM the tachometer starts bouncing around. The distributor is brand new, and the install went smooth except that one of the CAP screws broke. I wouldn't think this would have anything to do with it.

Did I get a bad distributor? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked grounds to make sure they are bolted/screwed down nice and tight? Had problem like that on my gsr and it was a loose grounding point.

I found it. It was loose connections on the ICM inside the distributor.

I cant believe they would sell a brand new distributor with loose connections, very annoying! If you are going to replace your distributor, CHECK THESE CONNECTIONS! Here is a picture for reference:

That is not a 5th Gen Distributor but its just to show you the wires. They are little slide on connectors, all my connections were COMPLETELY loose. Slide off each connection and pinch them down with needle nose, then slide them back on so they are very snug and do not move. You must take off the Cap, Rotor and little plastic cover to see the wires.

Also unrelated PRO TIP for taking off your rotor, all that holds it on is a screw, the engine must be cranked to the right position to see it. The 5th gen only has 1 position you can see it, which is facing towards the front of the car. If its not facing the right direction, unplug your coil wire (The short one that doesn't go to your spark plugs) and start your car for a split second, it will move a position. Once you can see it, it can be hard to loosen with just a screw driver, so before you strip it, attach a big locking plier to the screw driver and press all your weight into the screw and turn, should break it easily without stripping.
