New 5th gen owner with a few questions

Just wanted to say hi to the community. I just picked up a '99 SH 5-speed yesterday with 99k original miles on it. It's a very nice car that has a few small issues that need to be addressed.

I am hearing a hard clunking noise in the passengers front wheel well area when turning hard left and hit any kind of bump, low spot, or high spot in the road. I have guessed that it's possibly a sway bar bushing (if the car has a sway bar, haven't looked) or possibly a bad strut?

Also I am hearing a rattling type of noise if I am cruising and then push the accelerator a bit, around 3000rpm, under the car I hear a sound which almost sounds like something rattling around in the cat or somewhere in the exhaust maybe?

The last thing I can think of off the top of my head is a noise coming from the engine compartment which sounds like a pulley with a bad bearing or something, only makes noise from about 800-2000RPM. Do the idler pulleys get noisy, how hard is it to replace?

Thanks guys, looking forward to being part of the community!!!

Hello and welcome!

Got any pics of the pasenger side? Looks like your windsheild has been replaced which makes me thihk it was hit on that side but the strut was never replaced afterwards. Time to get coilovers and lower it.

The rattling can be from the cat heat sheild coming loose. Common on these cars. Probably just needs a tiny bolt replaced to make it tight again.

Has your timing belt been changed yet? You're getting close and converting over to a manual tentioner may fix that whine you get. Or one of your accessory belts are worn.

That paints cherry man. Good find. I'd check all the bushings for the clucking and check your motor and tranny mounts to.. And yes we have sway bars :-) wouldn't be a super handling package without em :-p

Thanks for the replies everyone and the nice comments about the condition. I picked the car up for $5450 (traded my '05 Civic for it) after a lot of waiting for the car that I really wanted. A lot have come for sale but most have been auto's which I hear are dreaded pieces of crap so I steered way clear of that mess. This car is a one owner car with 99k original miles on it. The car was in a very minor drivers side fender bender at some point in it's life and insurance replaced the necessary body parts and covered a factory quality spray job on it, probably why it looks so nice for it's year.

The car was driven by an older gentleman and is unmolested, no intake, fart cans, lowering kits, etc etc. I don't plan on "ricing" it out but I wouldn't mind doing a few minor performance mods to it just because I am so in love with this engine I want to squeeze every last drop from it that I can. I was thinking a short ram intake, headers, exhaust, and a VTEC controller. The previous owner did have the headlights converted to HID which I really like, they are some bright ass mofo's!

I am also getting a very random and intermittent CEL for "cylinder 2 misfire". After the first time it threw the code I went ahead and replaced the cap, rotor, wires (with the nice NGK ones), and a new coil (the old one had a hairline crack in it but seemed to work ok, didn't want to take any chances). After replacing all of that it seemed to have fixed the problem up until today when it threw the code again. What should I do next to remedy this problem? Also somewhat related, when my CEL light comes on for the misfire, my ATTS light comes on as well. Is this normal for the ATTS light to come on whenever the CEL comes on? It's not giving any codes related to the ATTS system when scanned.

the atts light always comes on with any cel. Skip the vtec controller, its worthless. Sorry I can't answer any other questions.

Sounds like your CEL is for a clogged EGR. Easiest remedy is to clean it out. Search on how to do so.

Thank you sir, if I get off early enough today I will try and do this to see if it fixes the problem.

Oh I thought I just saw holes where the caps should be.. why are they dark?

Just so you know, I/H/E don't really do much on a stock prelude.

They are good components to upgrade once you make more power from something else, but stock wise it's a huge waste of money.

People will argue and say otherwise, all I can say is look at dynos.. and remember that 3 HP is as noticeable as taking a dump before you drive.

My center caps are all black with the Honda "H" embossed in them, I take it they are supposed to be painted?

Thanks for the suggestion on the I/H/E I will save my money. I have already ordered an AEM short ram so I'll stick that on and call it good.

Short of rebuilding the long block with performance parts what can be done for more HP on these motors. Is it worth it to drop a set of performance cams in it without having other intenal upgrades. Also what's the general consensus about modded ECU's? I was looking at one on eBay that drops the VTEC to 4500rpm, different fuel map, and makes the CEL a shift light, etc. Bogus?

Thanks all!!

no, someone before you probably painted them.

The factory OEM center caps are silver metallic with black "H" lettering.

Very nice paint. Looks like it has been repainted? (missing decals on trunk)

Could be sway bar linkage, ball joint, or bad strut, etc. You'll have to check each to be sure. Hard to tell, not being there of course.

Check the heat shields for the rattling. Also, the rubber exhaust mounts. I had a torn one and the exhaust was rattling against the shield by the rear tire passenger side. Once I replaced the rubber mount, it centered the pipe again and I haven't had that problem since.

I've got a "whirring" noise coming from my alternator at the moment. The bearings are going bad in it. Got another one on order which should take care of it. Unfortunately, being so close to the headers, I imagine it will be a constant problem due to the excessive heat in that area.

Welcome to the Forum! There is a lot of information available here and most of the users are very knowledgable!
Beware though... do a search on your questions before posting to see if they have already been answered or you'll have some posting nazis breathing down your neck pretty fast! LOL

After having my codes read again today looks like my Cyl 2 Misfire code is gone, I'm getting a catalyst code now which after doing some searching looks like I need a new cat. Guess I'll be getting that done pronto!

That cyl 2 misfire will go away and come back. At least that is what mine did.
