Need transmission advice

I don't know exactly whats wrong with my tranny. Mechanics keep telling me its leaking pretty bad and that if i don't fix it in 3 months it will burn out.

I got qouted today that a resealing process with a new clutch install would be $1074.25

OR

A new Overhaul transmission (I have no idea what overhaul tranny means) completely redone with a new clutch is $2023.44

Are these good prices?? I really have no freaking idea what im doing here. someone help me out

I had my transmission "overhauled" which is new seals, and bearings, along with inspection of syncros and gears for $500.

BUT i had the tranny out.

Ask the mechanics for a break down of the pricing so you know exactly what you're getting

Ok...so the tranny's out and they want to charge you $1000 to re-seal it and then re-install?? To change a clutch and flywheel once the tranny is out shouldn't take for than 30 min.

The above quoted prices, is that just labor or does that include parts? Ask the shop to provide you with a printed/written breakdown of what they're going to charge you both for parts and labor. I bet you could get a upgraded clutch and lighter flywheel on ebay for what your mechanic will charge you for an oem one.

If it were me I'd do the rest myself but if you have no mechanical experience you're a bit screwed.

This mechanic, that im not sure i trust, said that the re-seal would only last another year or so before my tranny craps out.

I went up there and told the guy to write everything out...he did, it just wasnt very detailed at all.

Im going to talk to a couple dif people to get dif opinions later on today. And ya im def screwed if i have to do it myself cuz im retarded when it comes to doing anything to a car besides putting in an intake or something.

If I do go the route of buying performance stuff, what should i be looking at? As in brands of clutches and flywheels, etc.?

I went with the Fidanza 8lb Flywheel and the Exedy Organic Clutch. I was very happy with them.

My manual clutch is getting a slippery so I decided to call a honda dealer.

they quoted me 1200 for all parts (clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing).

that's Honda's price, and your mechanic feels that he deserves the same amount of money? The only thing they need to do, if it's a sealant issue, is to change the bushings at the driveshafts, the packing paper between the engine and tranny, and the sealant at the mainshaft of the tranny. These things are not that difficult to do.....

thanks for the quick responses guys

i think im just going to have him fix the immediate problems and them close up. Im low on funds so i have to deal with replacing the clutch/flywheel, etc. later on.
