I think that goes the same way for everyone else, cause it happens to me to when I'm racing. Whenever I'm racing I just "slam" it from 1 -> 2. I do the same thing for my 3 -> 4 shift its just easier cause it's not as "notchy"
BTW, I'm not a transmission expert but maybe the reason the 1 -> 2 shift fells "notchy" when your racing is cause your "forcing" it.
EDIT: and also in regards to beatys post, I wouldn't recommend "powershifting" if your just cruising around, in fact I think that you shouldn't be powershifting
PERIOD.
just rev-match your shifts both racing and cruising, and practice making your "racing" shifts fast
AND precise.
