Need new engine-what is compatible 98 prelude h22a4

98 Prelude base Needing a new engine. I see posted to ebay a lot of engines they say are compatible. Looking at car-part site, I see only 98 is compatible. Mine is h22a4 Anyone know, can I only get one from a 98 model or can I get one from Accord/Prelude 97 to 01 without changing a bunch of stuff?? Thanks in advance!!

There are lots of engines that will drop right in dating back to a 1993 Prelude up to a 2001 Prelude. You can also use an F-series Accord/Prelude engine with minor effort.

My understanding 2.2 vtec & 2.3 vtec are the same

From what I can tell based on what you say and what I read, an engine from a 2000 Accord (w/o ULEV) would be a direct fit, for my 98 prelude. I intend on swapping my intake, exhaust as I usually do. I am just curious why some say it is a 2.2 or 2.3 engine. Also, do I need to change distributor or are they the same.

Thats expensive but it would work. You will also lose your PS.

I would just get another H22A4 from a 97-01 non SH model. It would direct fit with no wiring changes.

eBay is a super fail on buying engines, heard nothing but horror stories from people I personally know, not just from that dirty lying whore known as the internet.

Call your local auto recycler or junk yard and see if they have any low mileage engines that fit a 97-01 prelude. You could do a import from like hmotorsonline.com but you need to change the distributor and oil pump from a US model for it to hook up, it can done by changing the wiring but that could just confuse whoever works on your car in the future.
