need input, bent valves

ok, i just did a search, didnt really find what i was looking for, and im in a real hurry. just about 15 min ago i was comin home on the highway, raced a car, shifted from 3rd at about 70 or 80 and mishifted to 2nd, reved really high. no idle is very, VERY lumpy, when slowing down to a stop, engine cuts off and stalls. i know i have bent valves, but is there anything else i should be worried about.

oh yeah, im a kid and just started a job, 6.25 hr., as many hours a week as i wan. so is it bad to drive around with bent valves for a while (two months), cuz im dead broke. and how much can i look at for the fix?

also, anyone know a reputrable place around virginia beach to get the work done?...

**** im really pissed so sorry for all that blabbering.....your input is GREATLY appreciated. thanx in advance

If at all possible I would get it looked as ASAP. There can be many things wrong with it, things that may make it worse and cost more in the end if you keep on driving it.

Sorry and hope it works out for you.

I heard about that happening . I never even thought about it but I almost shifted into 2nd when i was in 5th just dropping it to fourth. I felt the uncommon feel so the RPMs didn't jump to high. Everything still works in mine but I know that feeling you felt man. I wouldn't drive it.

if he was in a higher gear and dropped it into a lower gear then no, the rev limiter does not protect the engine in that case

don't drive it and get it fixed as soon as possible, the condition of your car is very bad right now

I think he would be beyond redline if he shifted from 3rd to 2nd going that fast.

well, unless you can do 70-80 in second (and the answer is no) without doing 10,000 rpm then damage has occured.

rev limiters only work when the car is accelerating under power. it won't do anything for missing a shift. it is just like jumping out of a truck doing 30 mph and you are limiting your legs to 10 mph. you legs are going move much faster when you hit the ground (actually you will just fall over).

Avery sorry to hear that...

as far as the rev limiter, just like the previous guy said... The clutch is the middle man between the engine and the transmission. The revlimiter only work for you during acceleration so you can't reach higher RPM's. But when you are already cruising at 100 MPH and you downshift to 2nd, the wheels contacting the ground will transmit all the torque right back to your engine.

The problem could be:

Bent Valves / Damaged Springs
Damaged Pistons
CAM / Rocker system
Connecting Rods (less likely)
Worn out Clutch (burning)
Damaged 2nd Main Gear and Counter 2nd Gear (less likely)
Other transmission problems (less likely)

I don't know what to tell you, did you hit the clutch before the engine Red Lined?

Again very sorry

your going to have to get it checked.
if your lucky you bent a few valves

but there are so many parts you could have broken/bent (valve guides, springs, rods, etc etc etc).

if your mechanically inclined you can take the head off yourself (not too hard) and take it to a machine shop and have them check it out.
the cheapest way i found to fix this (when i bent my valves) was to just buy a new head ($450) and slap it on. sold my old head for $300 so it wasnt too bad.

Dude if you drive it for 2 months the chances of it actually going for the 2 months is slim....you will very possibly have a catastrophic failure....YOU WILL BE SORRY......so do yourself a favor and find another way....borrow some money....

agree, i mean you have bent valves now, drive it for 2 months i wouldnt be surprised if part of your valvetrain gets messed (or breaks) and then you will then be needing a new engine.

well, i just got off the phone with a shop and the guy said that he can repair what needs to be done for around 275-375, but thats if i pull the head myself, and just give him the head to work on, and put the head back on myself. sounds good so i'll talk with my cousin, since he'll be the one taking off and putting on my head if i do this, and i'll see whether to do this, or buy a head from someonelse selling one.

i'll keep you guys posted

ok, so my cousin is going to help me so hopefully i can get everything fixed for under 400$

but i need one more thing. i dont have a Helms so can any of you post up the page on/about the head (removing/installing)? basically all i need are the torque specs, and if there is anything majorly diff. about doing this on a h22 than anyother car.

he hasnt worked on cars for a while so this will be a refresher for him, so the helms might come in handy
