first of all, I have did plenty of searchs.. so.. here i go. i have a really loud knocking sound coming from the engine. it knocks at idle and faster as i rev it. had the noise ever since i installed an aem cai, thats all the mods i have. (mom blames the noise on that, but how could that cause it) but since i have the cai, i have been red lining it many times a day which might have caused it. have a 99ss, 60k , oil change at every 3k, last one a week ago. its not a tapping noise, more like a knock knock with a clank every now and then. i thought it was valves, so i adjusted them my self, here might be the prob, first time, i adjust everything exactly according to helms, but i turned the crank CLOCKWISE ever time instead of CC.. started it, then the sound was the same, maybe lil louder. though about it long and hard, realize wat i did wrong, so waited till next morning and did it over. did it .005"in and .006exh. its still loud. sound is not coming from under the valve cover, its sounds like its lower then that. car idles fine, drove it a lil bit and engines pretty smooth. i put my hand on the valve cover and i cant feel any taps or knocks, i feel the PS pump vibrate more then the Valve cover. i have drove the car for day, been afraid after reading some posts. what could it be????
I know you had to enlarge the hole into the bumper for the CAI. the CAI maybe hitting the metal around it. I had that problem. But if it is coming from the engine I don't know without hearing it.
i used some cut rubber hoses to protect the cai part from rubbing, and the exhaust im pretty sure is fine, its definately coming from the engine some where
I have an SS, and my car was making a similar noise when i was idleing at high or reeeeeeveing my engine. lol
I took to honda under the warranty (which you should still have unless you bought it else where) It was the AUTO TENSIONER Bracket rubbing against the belt. Whenever the engine flex at high RPM it rub against it.. They replaced the bracket.
just got back from a local shop, honda wanted 75 bucks to just check it out. local tech listened to it and felt the engine for vibs, he conclude that the PS pump was going bad. i felt it and it was vibrating like crazy, plus when i turn the wheel, at anytime, it would squeak. i asked him how sure is he, he said 95%, i asked him if we could take the belt if to see if the noise would stop, he did it for free, and the sound is gone, had nothing to do with the engine, SOOO relieved its not the engine, but sad i gotta get a new PS pump. he said to leave the belt off and drive like that just incase theres debris in the pump that might spread and mess other stuff up. so im haveing a new driving experience driving with no Power steering. IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYBODY THAT HAS A PS FOR SELL, HOOK A FELLOW LUDER UP.
