You can use a base engine as long as you use a Base transmission and axles too.

If you swapped in a Base engine, you'd have to also use a non-SH transmission, intermediate shaft and base axles. The car would run fine like an open-diff Prelude without atts. If you want to keep it find another SH engine.

Define "Blew the motor" did you pop a timing belt... shoot a rod through the block... what did you do exactly? you may want to consider a rebuild of your current engine....

If its not totally trashed at least on the rebuild you'll know that somebody else has not beat the junk out of the engine when you get it back.

you could have Honda do it and spend a small fortune... but you should be able to find some honda sport shop that could do the work for you.

plus on top of the the SH also has some specific suspension pieces (correct me if i'm wrong) so to me it would be a better route to rebuild what you have instead of changing a ton of stuff to outfit your car back to a base model.

also you threw down the cash to get an SH why downgrade to the base?
you would most definitely have to unbrand your car as an sh...

but seriously i would think a rebuild is a much better idea.

If you want to retain the ATTS, you're going to need a Type SH Motor & Trans.

The base will not work.

dang that sucks for sure....

yea so the head is not doing well at all...
you would need a new head, probably a good deal of valves, pistons
i would think the rods too.

so to agree to keep the ATTS only an SH motor will do

either way i would still stick with the SH stuff converting would be a longer road to take.

you'd have to have somebody look at that head to see how bad it is i would assume it couldn't be fixed for a reasonable amount on money.

you would have to compare the cost of parts and ballpark estimate of the top end work on the engine to what it would cost to find a decent used h22

happy hunting....

The suspension differences have nothing at all to do with the engine/atts compatibility.

i was in the same situation with my 97 SH a couple months ago.. i decided to just get another SH engine.. i got a 99 SH motor with alittle over 100K on it for 900 bucks.. to much money to spend on the swap.. (base tranny, axles, computer and wire harness is different i think to.. and the motor) it's at least gonna be the more cost effect way to do it.

id say drop the sh and just go with a base its a better built transmission anyway, atts is crap thats y i got rid of mine
your suspension is what really distinguishes you from other preludes not the motor
