Here's the story...
I started off this morning taking off my Unorthodox crank pulley since my engine started having a faint rod knock.
I test drove my car with the stock crank pulley for a few rounds around the block then decided to punch it to see how different it would feel with the stock pulley back in place.
Everything seemed fine until i went to stop at a stopsign. This is when my engine dropped RPM and sputtered and then died when i stepped on the gas. I tried to start it up, but after about 15 seconds of cranking, the engine would sputter up again but dying after a few seconds. Now the engine won't start anymore. At first, I thought that my timing belt had snapped but i pulled my valvecover off and saw that evrything was in place. I changed the distributor cap and rotor about 200 miles ago with new plugs about 75 miles ago and the wires are about 1000 miles old.The engine is a 97 H22a4 with 56000 miles.I kinda doubt that my distributor could have gone bad so early. So what other possibilities could be causing my engine to not start up and run normally? I also replaced the fuel filter when I replaced the distributor cap and rotor and I recently swapped out my accord fuel pump for the 97 prelude fuel pump.fuel pressure is at 40psi when i turn on the key so i know that the engine is getting enough fuel. Please help me with this problem because I don;t know where to start. ALso....how can i check to see if my distributor is functioning properly?
yes, my alternator belt is in place.
I know that my battery has enough cranking amps to
at least turn the engine over and get it firing,
but i'll swap in a new one in a few minutes.
thanks for the replies!!
i swapped in a fresh battery, but my engine still would not fire
up. I checked my ignition and fuel delivery and they both are
fine. I don;t know what's causing this. I wanna pull out my engine
and tear everything down, but i don;t wanna find out after i pulled everything out that it was something i could've fixed with the engine still in the car. One more thing....I noticed a squealing sound coming from the timing-side of the engine whenever i would try to start my engine. What could this be? it sounds like a metal-to-metal sqeualing sound.....water pump maybe? but a bad waterpump wouldnt disable my entire engine and keep it from firing up, would it?
I have a feeling that it could be one of my balance shafts...can anybody help me on this???
thanks in advance for your time and help!
In order for you to take the crank pulley off, you'd have to had access near your crank sensor right? It's the elec plug that is very near the crank pulley, neatly tucked away along the block... If you did some damage to this sensor, it's possible that that may be your reason. Maybe can't determine your crank position to the ECU so maybe that's why? I heard that the crank sensor is VERY sensitive, so you might wanna bust out a helms manual to see how you can check it just in case.
1) Battery problem? No way, or the car wouldn't crank at all.
2) Alt problem? Doesn't sound like it. If the alt stops charging, your charge light on dash wold glow red.
3) Distributor? Probably not...
Did you reset your ecu after you replaced the stock crank pulley? not sure how much it would matter, but since it's an underdrive pulley, I'd think it may matter? Not very sure about THIS, but anything's worth a try now right? Good luck!
hey i have a friend with a 92 prelude h23a that has the same sputtering problem.we just changed recently the fuel filter and later that day the car died at a stop sign, while trying to turn it back on it sputters backfires and dies.we need help asap!to know what could be the problem.the same things happen that happen to (h22accordss).it turns on with hesitation and dies out.its throwing white smoke from the intake and exhaust...please help asap!
