I bought my 97 SH last week for $500, has a thrown rod and needs a new engine, paid $1250 for a long block, and gonna pay $400 to a buddy to help me put it in, all in all a little over $2k for the prelude itself. Basically a new engine will normally run about $1800-$2300, and a shop is going to charge about 11.5 hours of labor, so you'd have to figure a shop's labor (its 11.5 hours on w/e book it is they use for a sh model with AC compressor and power steering, asked a shop friend to look it up for me). Shops in my area charge anywhere between $75-$99/hr so labor will probably run $800-$1200. Your looking at about $3k-$3.5k for an engine replacement done by a shop, so find KBB price, knock off $100-$300 for bumper, then $3-$3.5k for engine, and that will be your negotiation point, i'd say start it about $3-400 above that price and lower it down negotiating, people like it when they can haggle a price down, they think they're one uping you :P
EDIT: Mine is costing me less, because I found a steal on a great engine, and i have friends who can help me put it in (i can do it myself, but i'm lazy :P) But per the value of this car ($5.5k, 236k miles, great condition other than engine) minus the $3.5k, i should have paid $2k for it, its nice to know people who take care of their cars and keep great service records and want a new Acura TL....
