mystery idle problem please help - symptoms inside
Hi --
I have swapped out a modified engine and put my old stock engine back in the car (it has been sitting in the garage for 4 years). The engine was never tampered with -- we just took off the IM / fuel rail and now put it back.
The idle sits at 900. Most of the time the rpms fall to 1200 and very slowly correct to 900. Other times it falls to about 1000, then jumps to 1500 and repeats.
They checked the map sensor, recalibrated the throttle body sensor, and did a valve adjustment. They agree with me that the car has power and runs fine. They checked the timing and cam positions.
They said that standard operating procedure is to advance the distibutor to + 15 degrees then calibrate but mine will only go to + 10 for some unknown reason.
They also noticed that the exhaust is very black and hurts the eyes as if I had no cat but I just passed a polution check last week.
They also said there were no apparent vacuum leaks -- but that is a question of being thorough and more time could be spent here.
Does anyone have some ideas?
