My S2000 Steering Wheel Project...

Hey guys,

I picked up a S2000 Steering wheel from the scrapyard for a great price but there is one catch... the airbag as been deployed. So that means the front cover has ripped open (on desginated crack points) which is attached to the airbag all together. The airbag/cover module itself about 400$USD. I feel comfortable not having an airbag, if I can only repair the cover cleanly...

The steering wheel itself, is leather wrapped, 3 spoke and measures 360mm in diameter. It is about 1" smaller than the 5th Gen Prelude steering wheel. The grip is great, kinda like like a aftermarket Mugen/Momo wheel... but I get to keep my horn and cruise control buttons...

I was told that is is possible to repair the cover buy using strips of plastic and plastic glue. I attempted to repair it last night and got pretty close but I don't like the look of the cracks still. It looks pretty ghettoish to mean. I'm thinking about just getting the entire cover reupholstered with leather/vinyl... There is enough slack on the edges so it wouldn't be tight or anything. But I would like to keep the stock 'H' emblem in the front...

Pics..

Personally, I think that looks like total ass.

If you can open it back up, look on the inside- there should be a marking as to what the material is- PP for polypropylene, PS for polystyrene (model plastic), ABS, etc. You can then get the RIGHT glue for it and glue it together at the seams (and hopefully make it look original).

Hoenstly, for $400 I'd spring for the new airbag. $400 is hondaautomotiveparts.com's price, hparts.com should be a little cheaper. Unless you spent a few hundred on the S2k wheel, that's not too much worse than what you'd spend on a nice new wheel and hub adapter...

Congrats- you're the first Prelude owner with an S2k wheel that I've seen so far. PICS!!!

I agree... I'm not one to sport the ghetto look... but I don't think it will look good by simply 'patching' it up no matter what kind of glue I use... I think I am leaning towards the reupholstered thing... I mean, if they can do up a whole car interior in vinyl, then they can do a simple steering wheel cover...

BTW, thanks marcucci for your earlier threads on this subject... Your contribution help my make my decision start this project... plus I was sick and tired of people keep on asking the same questions ('can an s2000 wheel fit on a prelude?')... so I figure I would do it and FAQ it afterwards...

personally, I have been in wrecks with and without airbags, I much prefer not having something exploding in my face at 200 mph

i personally wouldn't mess around with someone else's steering wheel....especially someone who had an accident holding that steering wheel.

I'm not farmiliar with how a steering wheel is constructed, so excuse me. But can you just buy the black shell that is wrecked w/o the airbag in it or is it just a package deal type thing?

Package deal. The plastic is the airbag.

I still think the old one can be saved. You can cover it, but you'll have to find a Honda emblem- I think the one on it is molded in and painted... if it comes off, it would probably go back on over leather and look nice.

Be sure to take pics and do FAQ it... I can also put it up on NTPOG if you're willing to do a mini writeup on it.
