Mr.Rices, How to Black house your headlight

Ok, someone asked me how to do this via email, so I rather just post it here so I don't have to say the steps again.
I was one of the first to do this little cheap mod, so I deserve to write about it.

Well, first off, the tools and Materials you need are

1)STRONG FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER

2)PHILIPS HEAD SCREW DRIVER

3)A HOT HEAT GUN (BTW not a hair dryer, unless your patient)

4)A strong Knife maybe

5)EXTRA SILICONE GLUE

6)BBQ BLACK SPRAY PAINT FOR HIGH TEMP, or you can use Shiny black paint, not too sure how hot it gets in the headlight, but jdm style like the old 97-2000 type-R is flat black

7)And Ratchets for taking off the bumper and headlights

Steps to do it

1) Take off the bumper

2) Take out the headlight

3) Bring the headlight to a comfortable corner, place the other one somewhere nice and dry, lint free area ( you dont want water getting into these things, or junk, dust etc..)

As you can see the Main headlight unit is two pieces, and inside there is the chrome reflector, and the greyish reflective outer housing. It is the greyish reflective OUTER housing we want to paint.

4) Use the heatgun and start heating the edges of the headlight, in a motion, heatguns are hot!! dont burn ur headlight up..

where you will see the black silicone glue starting to SOFTEN up.

5)Use the STRONG flat head, try to pry it open. ITS HARD TO PRY OPEN THE SILICONE JUST SOFT,DRY,HOT so you may have to CUT IT, poke holes in it.. You can use a knife, or use the flat head screw driver as a knife, to shred the black silicone so its more of a ease to RIP AND PRY the headlight open, know what I mean? (very important for a easier time)

6)After all silicone is loose and headlight is pryed open, (make sure none of that silicone touches the inside chrome reflective parts.. look at the outer housing which you have to paint, it is held by TWO screws. (well..At least I remember it as two screws)

7)Unscrew them, and take out this silverish grey outside housing.

8)Bring to an open area, and use ur skills to spray paint it with the BBQ black or..Whatever color. Pink? just kidding..And wait for it to dry

9)Install the black housing back into the headlight, screw its two screws back in, and Heat back up the stock silicone, try to use as much of the stock silicone as you can, also add a lot of the newly purchased silicone around the shredded edges of the ripped silicone, (to prevent condensation) And after the silicone is heated again, press the headlight back together REALLY HARD..PRESS PRESS PRESS...And.... you can silicone it again and again if you want.

LET IT DRY UP AND COOL DOWN b4 reinstallation

10)Install the headlight back on the car, and put that bumper back on. And your done.

Last words..

Its easy, not bad mod for a few bucks. pretty common sense.

No heat gun? Borrow it from a friend. Hair dryers suck. Oven? U can try..Some people tried it. But i dont recommend it. mmmm tasty headlight.. Goodluck

I'd rather use the oven. Does anyone know what to preheat it to, or how long to leave it in there for?

Thanks for the write up!

LMAO! Tedious huh?

Nice sales pitch...!

I've cleared out my friends 300zx tails, and done a set of civic head lights; now that was a *****. This is probably cake.

I just don't want to use a hot gun again, I burnt the shiet out of my hand...

it takes me about six hours to open the headlights with heatgun + dry heat process, paint (w/ six coats of any color desired), cut away excess sealer, reapply epoxy resin sealer seal headlights w/ new epoxy resin and vacuum seal the entire system

that is why i charge $150....the people on the rsx boards are charging 250+ so i was thinking i was doing everyone a service

Haha, well seriosuly i aint trying to get this job done for free or nething, but i'm just sayin. like ppl on the s2k board, clearing out their headlights.. i dont see anyone even charging money u know.. they'll offer help to anyone.. and i dont mean like do the whole job, i mean just help em out.. meaning ppl who've done it b4 help out the ppl who haven't done it. It's supposed to be a "cheap mod" instead of buyin some JDM set and crap like that.. and yea yea 150's cheaper than buying a whole set but still.. just to help out fellow luders u know

I'd be happy to do it with any fellow luder, I meant if you want to just drop the headlights off for a couple hours it would cost you $50. Anyone interested in doing mine and your own next weekend at my house or yours? I think it'd be cool.

$150 is QUITE steep. Stick it in the oven for 6 minutes and it's off. Then all you gotta do is paint.. few hours later.. stick it back in for 6 minutes.. and yr done. Hell, ive used the oven so many times, it's my best friend
