Most important info for type sh (atts equiped) axle replacement

So replacing my axles today which should be straight forward. So, this is just an fyi, for everyone replacing their axles on a type sh. The right side (passenger side) axle is straight forward, easy, and the manual states exactly how to do it. The right side (driver side) is a completely different issue. As you are probably aware the atts unit only allows you to put one huge pry bar on the axle. In order to pop the axle out you will need a long bar/beam/screw driver and come from above (ie top of engine compartment) and give a hard tap to the axle right around where the oil filter is while another person is prying on the pry bar that is wedged into the axle. This took me hours to figure out, cause no matter how much force you apply to the pry bar, if you don't tap it will never come out.

So the manual states tap with a plastic mallet, it just doesn't say where. Now you know.

This should be re-titled something like "Removing Driver Side Axle on a Type-SH" and FAQ'd. Almost nobody knows how to pull this off, its one of the great mysteries in Preludedom and using this method, it takes less than one second!!!

Hit a bar (i used a breaker bar) with a mallet from the top where the yellow arrow is, while prying with a pry bar where the green arrow is. Comes out incrediably easy :-)

I agree with changing the name. It would make it much easier to search for. Only problem, I can't figure out how to change the title of the thread. I have only figured out how to change a post. Any help is appreciated. By the way nice picture, it really helps explain what to do.

when we swaped the type s in, it came with the axle ends still in the engine, we didnt think to take em out until the engine was in, took us 2 days but we finally took a tie rod end puller to the back of the axle, and taped it with a hammer, and she came out pretty nicely

Thanks for this info. My mechanic couldn't remove that axle when he changed my clutch and also when he put new CV boots on my axles. I asked him how much to replace one of the ATTS oil pressure sensors which requires dropping the ATTS and he said he wouldn't do it because he thought he would break the ATTS housing if he tried to remove that axle again. I wish mechanics would do some research once in a while before giving up. Hopefully he will help me out now, I hate having to go to my local dealer (the only real alternative).

Huh? Are you talking to me? Longest run on sentence ever award goes to you!

Why do you think I'm here? It's mostly for the knowledge! Oh, and the off topic forum too.
