This morning, my trunk was open...

At about 9:45 this morning, I opened my front blinds and saw the trunk of my lude was open. When I went out in my robe, looking very confused, my neighbor came and told me he saw it closed at around 6am, but was later open. He thought it was odd, but I'm always messing with my cars, so he apparently didn't think it was that weird.

Weird parts:
1) Everything is still in the car.

2) No sign of forced entry

3) I have a paging alarm and it doesn't seem to have gone off (though just opening the trunk doesn't set it off, it seems)

4) My trunk is shaved, so there is no key hole on the outside. The only way in is through the interior release or fold-down seat.

5) Probably over a year ago, I went out to my old Celica, which had no alarm, and the stereo face was on the passenger seat. I did not even know the face came off of that stereo! So, someone had been in the car, and not taken anything, probably because they saw the flip-down face revealed a tape deck I know I wasn't just imagining it, because they also yanked some of my EMS wiring out of the connectors, so that the car wouldn't start without re-assembling the connectors. They probably thought this was some stereo equipment, but couldn't make heads or tails of it, so left it.

So, either:
1) I left my trunk unlatched and it stayed down for ~12 hours, then suddenly popped up (it's a base model with a spoiler, and the trunk barely moves up when it's popped, because I doubt the springs were ever adjusted)

2) Something is wrong with my trunk and it popped randomly after 12 hours of non-use

3) Someone broke in and took nothing, for whatever reason. Maybe what they saw was too big, or they were scoping it out for later?

I have no idea why someone would leave the trunk open, so I'm curious if anyone has had their manual trunk just pop open for no apparent reason? I don't see any evidence of someone putting a wire/slim-jim down the glass to pull the trunk release...so, is there some known trick that people use to do this?

what do you have in your trunk?

maybe if they opened it and there's nothing really worth taking, they just moved on.

Sub, amp, junky tool kit. Plenty worth taking, but not exactly if you're on foot and pressed for time.

At least they didn't break or tear anything up.

My Lude had the driver side window busted out a few days ago and nothing was taken. It took me about 20 min to clean all the glass up with my shop vac. I'm glad i had the trunk and the glove box locked.

I am glad nothing is messed-up, and I'm sorry for people who are less fortunate (I've been there!!!) but I can't help but think that this event, whatever the hell actually happened, won't repeat itself.

The Police here are not going to do about it, I can assure you, because there's not really anything to do. I don't know if they'd even want to take a report, since nothing was missing and it's even uncertain as to what the cause was.

The point of my post wasn't to get support, since everything is A-OK, but just see if anyone else has had totally weird stuff happen to their car like this. I mean, I'm pretty sure the alarm didn't even go off! If I had a trunk popper, I would have chocked it up to that, but it's all mechanical.

This actually happened to me last week also. Walked out in the morning and the trunk wasn't latched down. Have subs, amp and golf clubs in the back that weren't touched. I hadn't been in the trunk for a few days before or gotten gas. I live on a college campus, so I'm pretty sure if someone wanted to open it they would have stolen stuff.

maybe you hooked it with a shoe or pantleg by accident?
it doesn't pop open all the way immediately, so maybe the pressure changed overnight and a breeze pulled it up by the spoiler.

Maybe you never closed it all the way and the wind just blew it up that morning.

X2
I have done this before while getting out of the car - 3x in fact in the last month! I realized it though when I did it.

Mmm, pedo bear...my ass hurts, already!

As I mentioned, I know it's possible that I unlatched the trunk and didn't notice it, but I'm certain that someone at least popped it up all the way. I can assure you that anything short of hurricane force winds will not blow my trunk open, and it was completely still that morning.

I just wanted to make sure there's not some weird trick to pop the trunk without setting off the alarm.

The lever is now locked, so we'll see!
