MODs that increase MPG

Now that Gas is sitting around $4/ gallon, and considering that on my last fill up I got about 22 MPG. I have decided that improving my mileage is a must.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I used to have a Del Sol, and some mods I did that greatly increased the mileage was...
Cold Air induction
Iridium Spark Plugs
Hot wires ( spark plug wires with Capacitors built int )
Using Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 0w30 Oil
Removing Catalic converter and replacing with test pipe.
Removing the Power Steering Belt

With these mods I got over 40MPG traveling at 80MPH with the Air Conditioner running. With over 350 lbs of passengers ( me and my wife ), and with 150 lbs of luggage.

Now the goal is to increase the mileage of my prelude. Currently I have
Cold Air induction
Orthodox Underdrive and PS pulleys.
Because of the idiots at Jiffy Lube my engine has Penzoil sythetic crap in it.
I will never goto jiffy lube again! Next Oil change I am putting in Mobile 1 0w30

I am thinking of doing some of the mods I had on my del sol to the prelude. but I wanted to get some feedback from others before I proceed.

Removing the Catalic converter and replacing with a test pipe makes a difference, but I am not sure if it resulted in my engine running lean, besides the funny smell and awful resonnance noise. Are there any high flow Cats anyone would recommend?

Is it bad to remove the Power Steering belt? and just muscle it. I heard something about its not good for the gears or something?

Any other suggestions?

22mpg is ridiculously low. Even in the worst stop & go I never went below 24 on the Prelude.

Sounds like you need basic maintenance.

Yep, a good tune-up is in order

The magnaflow/carsound high flows are cheap and effective.

Yea, I just got the car so I need to do a tuneup bad. My RX7 struggles to get 9-10 mpg babying it when I rarely drive it. Got to love 1680cc injectors and 2 supra TT FPs.

22 isnt that low if its an automatic

your best bet would be a total tune up as ppl said above, but do it thoroughly run through cleaning your ports and valves on the egr, clean out your engine bay throw some zinc in your oil next time.

Let's face it, in houston mileage just sucks and it's not just cuse of the stop n gos on the 2 loops, it's just the constantly unpredictable climate, all you can count on is for it to reach a peak temp by 3:30 but does it really heat up from 2 hours before that, or does it stay breezy and moderately humid, there's just no way around driving in houston and it sucking. Spend a little more time letting your car warm up before you drive it off, start there, coast some into more stops and off exit ramps as carefully as you can.

And come to the june 22 meet with the houston prelude club and check out the blue lude with the carbon fiber hood and tail and ask him how his gas mileage is and how he gets it

Yeah it might be time for a tune up. Although I kind of want to blame the penzoil that jiffy lube put in it.

Yep, a good tune-up is in order

In reference to this. Any performance gains for this? Change in sound, smell, or anything else. Also how much do they cost for a 97 SH?

If I am free on the 22nd I might have to come checkout the meet. I am not sure if the weight savings of the carbon fiber hood and tail will make that big of a difference in MPG. But I know from experience that removing the CAT and Power Steering Belt does make a difference. Although I never had a VAC so for all I know I could have been running lean ( which isn't good either ).

Also back to the original questions. Is it safe ( mechanically ) to remove the powersteering belt? I can handle tough turning, but I don't want to do any damage to the car. I just want to make sure the PS doesn't provide any kind of mechanical lubrication that I would be disabling.

I have a greddy cat back exhaust, would I get better mpg by putting in a test pipe, header and test pipe, or leave it the way it is? Thanks.

Technically, a test pipe should increase MPG. However, you won't pass emissions, so that doesn't sound like a good move to me.
