Minor Tapping

I jus got a 2001 Prelude SI. I noticed a very minor tap coming from the motor and im not sure if this is common because of the vtec or if i need to look into fixing it. the car is in beautiful condition and was never driven hard so i cant see it being a problem but i really would like to know from someone with experience. can someone please help me?

might be the auto tensioner about to go i have the same problem on mine, you should do the auto to manual tensioner conversion its about $100 for all the parts

I don't know if he has an auto tensioner. He has an Si, which probably doesn't come with an H22, but rather the F22.

Valve adjustment may be needed.

Check to make sure that tapping is not coming from your crankshaft pulley. If that is the cause, don't drive the car until the crankshaft bolt is torqued to spec.

I've got a slight tapping noise coming from the PS pump, from what i understand its due to air bubbles (the reservoir was bubbling kind of) but its definitely causing the tapping noise

I had the same problem with my prelude. (97) I spent thousands of dollars trying to fix the " tapping " or " ticking " Its cause by the auto tensioner failing..also you might need a valve adjustment. You could be looking at replacing the auto tensioner. Timing belt. Balancing belt and water pump..because it should all be replaced at the same time..Also changing into a thicker oil will cause the ticking or tapping to quite down a little bit. I dont know the mileage on your motor or if you have already done this or not..In saying this..after i spent all my money I still had the ticking..I still drive my car with the ticking because I have no choice..will eventually need a motor over haul. Hope that helped.

Autotensioner automatically tensions the timing belt. The manual tenstioner tensions it manually set by the installer.

Autotensioners have been notorious for failing at any point for many years.

Manual tensioners do technically the same job with hardly any failure rate, however, you must instal and make sure everything is set correctly, or else your timing belt may try and "walk" off of the cam gears.
