Major tune-up.

I called my dealer and here's what I got

That for the water pump, timing belt, and other drive belts: $540

Valve adjustment: $138

90k tune-up:$450~

Now, I thought that the timing belts, ect. Was under the the 90k, but they said that was seperate(the 90k is just a few oil changes and a bunch of filters and inspections and such). They also said that the timing belt water pump stuff is normally done at 105k, but bieng that my town is considered extreme weather, it is done at 90k. Yet I've been hearing on this site for months now, that its called the 90k for a reason, and I've never even heard of the 105k.

So, even though none of that matters, are those prices above good? They don't sound too good to me, but I don't have much of a choice bieng that it sounds like thats what I got for the rest of the shops I called around town.

It looks like MyLude2001 got an amazing deal, half the stuff she mentiuoned isn't een included, and she still got a great price.

Thanks

I'd have to know everything they plan on doing on the 90K tuneup but it sounds, so far, very overpriced. The timing belt job is very essential tho so it's worth doing, and that part is a good price.

I think thats about what I payed for the timing part, but watch out because I had another ~100 dropped on me because the autotensioner crapped out and they had to do that too... And find out if that quote includes the gasket because I had that dropped on me too when I went to check out

One of the shops I called said they usually check the gaskets, but won't replace them unless they leak, or if its the second major tune-up, which it is for me(180k). As for the auto tensioner, Thats funny, I thought that was included in the timing belt change. I didn't know you DIDN'T have to do that, I think it might be worth it to do it anyways. Should I do the manual tensioner, or the auto tensioner?

Yes, I agree, most of it is overpriced, on of the shops said they would only do the valve adj. if required, so I probably don't need to do that, or I can at least wait until I get my helms, and then do it for myself.

Should I check somewhere ells? (where ells would I check?) Would It be worth it to drive(600 miles round-trip) to san bruno and pay 750 for everything MyLude2001 got?

What do you think?

Thank you very much.

The problem is that on our engines, to get to the timing belts you have to pull the valve cover, and every time you pull it off you're supposed to replace the gasket (correct me if I'm wrong guys.) And the shop I went to was a strictly OEM kind of place and would not have done the manual tensioner swap for me. From what I've read, the manual is what you want to go with though. I think my total cost at the shop was about 1k, and that was with the clutch master and slave, timing and whatever other belts, autotensioner replacement, fuel filter... and something else I think... I say just skip the tune up, because that's probably a bunch of stuff you can do at home like oil, spark plugs, air filter, and whatnot... That's about all the experience I have, if any of this is wrong older members, please correct it

Well, I'm gonna have it done tomorrow morning(timing; W/Pump; other belts). ~all for $550.

But heres the odd part, the guy said that the tech's down there know how to do it without taking the cover off, therefore they don't have to replace that gasket(I asked if the total price covered the replacement of the gasket, he said it wouldn't be needed). Is this a gimick? I don't want to drive it for a day before finding a leak.

Is there any way I could get around getting skrewed? I already told the guy the situation, but I don't want o become liable for something I already warned/explained.

Not such a good deal I guess...but it must be done.

Is it normal to hear faint whines that werent there before within the first some-odd amount of miles after getting new belts installed, cause there are a couple(can't put finger on them[it]) new almost high-pitched whines additional to the usual engine whines that are there now, but I think that may be normal for brand-new belts...

What do you guys thing/have experienced?

Thanks very much.

If they replaced the autotensioner, that probably is causing it. Don't worry, because now you can tell noobs you have a supercharger! There's a thread all about it somewhere, and it isn't supposed to cause any problems
