major problems

My '97 has some very wierd symptoms and between multiple garages nobody can give me a cleancut answer as to what the problem is. When trying to accelerate sometimes nothing will happen and I have to fully depress the pedal to get the car to accelerate, it then immediately slows down and I have to constantly repeat this process. It will also occasionally surge and backfire when driving, and surge when idling. I have replaced cat converter front O2 sensor and cooling sensor, after this it ran weel for a short time then relapsed. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Are you throwing any codes? Did you check the throttle body/throttle cable? It might be sticking.

Hmmmmm, could be your induction system like TJ said.

But it may also be a fuel regulation issue. Check your pressure to verify your pressure regulator is regulating the correct pressure.
