looking for a lude...found this one...thoughts?

1998 Honda Prelude SH Manual only 87k Miles

2nd owner, only mods are the carbon fiber hood & tail-lights, but he has the stock lights so i'd swap those back. theres a "fist" size dent by the gas cap he said, where exactly is that, can't really tell from the pics...im going to go take a look on thursday.

but seems good otherwise, everything major has been done recently and low miles....

I get the feeling this isn't a real SH. Reason is that it lacks spoiler and those extra set of rims are from the base model. If you're gonna look at this, check to see if it's a real SH. When you open the door, a real SH would have courtesy lights on the door panel. The side skirt should be a perfect match to the body paint. Also, you can pop the hood and see if you can find the oil filter. If it's angled upwards, then it's a real SH, if it's parallel to the ground, it's a base model. You could also pop your head under to see if you can spot the ATTS unit, but if you don't know what to look for it's tricky unless you can put it on a hoist. There's probably easier ways to determine an SH, but those come to mind.

yeah i was looking @ some articles to tell the difference and the wheels/spoiler thing tipped me off right away...I should be getting the VIN later and that should tell me right? if its a base...offer less? or whats this worth? seems like it should be ready to go if all the work he said thats been done is done, timing belt/water pump, clutch etc etc

Well, when people start telling me it's an SH and I can clearly see it's not, I get a little suspicious. Those tail lights aren't stock either, but he failed to mention that in the ad. Gotta wonder what else he's done to it. I would certainly get the car inspected by a trusted mechanic before making an offer. I would also ask him how it came to be that a car of that age would have such low mileage. Now my car's a '97 and it has less miles then that '98, but I know the previous owner and he just didn't drive it that much. I'd be asking this guy a bunch of questions and I'd expect good answers.

looks like its missing the front turn signals and fog covers in the bumper. even if they were blacked out they would still be visable. good luck.

Read the VIN, if the third number is a 4, it's a base.

The car looks very promising, especially considering the price. Definitely go check it out. I wish I could have found one with that low mileage when I bought mine.

The price seems too low for something fishy to NOT e going on, bot for now, I will agree with indy and say just check it out and drive/inspect it yourself or take it to someone if it makes you feel comfortable. It just may be the deal of a lifetime...

All race out just by the looks of it. Maybe a cluster switch? Burn out tranny replace? That's what happen to mine previous owner said new clutch but different tranny.

I would take the one with low original miles over one with a rebuild any day if they are the same price. Also that first one is a year newer. That second one is nicer looking, but given the choice I would still go for the first one. Once you ditch the stupid looking hood and tails the first one would be looking good to.

^first two are better, that one has 140k with no rebuild for the same price as the other 2.

in one ad i saw he placed it said "bottom half of engine rebuilt @ 135k"

not really all that up on mechanicals so is that just as good as a rebuild or what??

That just means he didn't have any head work done. If he is selling it that soon after a rebuild, there is a good chance that something went bad with the rebuild and he doesn't want to fix it. Check that one out very closely before you buy it.

i ran the carfax on the original lude i posted, and seems to have had 4 owners...miles seem about right, guess the last time it was registered it was the beginning of 07' and that was stated @ 80k. so i guess the last two years its only seen 8000 miles? i guess ill find out myself friday

Well, that second car looks very clean, but the high milage is still somewhat unattractive.

I really hope you find what you are looking for. Please search those cars rigorously before you buy them, Find EVERY imperfection you can, and "knock 'em" for it! The first two cars seem like OK deals, but the first car seems sort of fishy like I said.......Are you sure it was not registered AT ALL for that entire time?

Post the first 10 characters of the VIN so we can tell you what kind of Prelude it is.
