Left CV Axle Removal

Is it easier to remove the driver's side CV joint together with the intermediate shaft attached to it instead of by itself or does it not make a difference? This is on a base manual transmission. I have another CV joint connected to an intermediate shaft and was thinking that they were probably taken off together because it's easier that way. In that case I'd swap one assemblage for the other. Am I right about that?

When I pulled mine out I left the intermediate shaft in place. It takes a bit of work but it'll pop out. I also believe that if you pull the intermediate shaft out of the transmission, you will drain the transmission fluid. I know the manual says to drain the transmission before removing the passenger side axle because you are taking it out of the differential. I would think the same would go for the intermediate shaft because it is also in the differential. I would separate the ones you have and just leave your intermediate shaft in the car, if there isn't anything wrong with it.

I used a pipe and wedged it between the CV axle and the intermediate shaft. Then I used it sort of like a crow bar.
