so i have had my 99' for over 2 years and discovered that the keyless entry module and all is still in the car from the factory. I have never used this feature cuz the car didnt come with the remote but now i want to see if all i need is just to get a remote for it. but my question is how do i know if this system is still working before i go and buy a remote for it??? anyway to check to see if it works?
See if a Honda dealer will loan you the correct fob and program it while at the dealership. If it works, buy it. Or try to find one online afterward for much less $.

Just find a friend with a '99-01 and use theirs to test it
Here are the programming instructions for a Civic (all Hondas are the same)

yea so just came back from the stealership and they didnt have any key fobs that i can test out and then they would have had to special order the key fob. on top of that they wanted to charge me $90 for test if the keyless module was good.....so now i dont know where that leaves me. all i want is to know if the module is good. i have the manual and tested the wire harness to see if it gets power, which it does so i know that's good. guess i'll just bite the bullet and order a key fob online, unless anyone has any other suggestions...
Damn, my dealership isn't that lame. That sucks. Yeah try another dealership, unless you can find someone else with a fob you can try. No friends with Hondas?
If you know the part number for the fob, getting one online should be reasonably cheap, especially if it's used. Then you aren't out a whole lot of $. I'd check ebay.

You will need a 5th gen Prelude key fob. I have used my fob on other peoples Preludes at car meets, just for the purpose of testing theirs like you want to do. Or if you ever see a 5th gen out in public, perhaps you can convince them to let you use theirs. When you reach step 12, (in the directions I posted above) STOP! If you move on to step 13 and hit the lock button, their remote will be programmed to your car and is a SECURITY RISK!

I'm actually watching both of those on ebay lol. as long as either works so that i can test it out is all that matters. better this than getting a new one...

guy sent me the wrong one, it's a real old remote for another honda. so now i'm gunna get another one off of there and make sure that its the right one this time.
****ty about the ebay guy. Does anyone know if a remote from another honda would work? Maybe you can find something else local, won't be the exact same button lay out but it'll open up your options? That is if a remote besides the 5th gen prelude will work.
Let us know who you got yours from. I'd like to get a second for myself some day.
