Just switched to mobile1 syn. how often should I change it?

Hey guys, I just switched to mobile1 synthetic oil. How often should I change the oil? I did a search and found some comparisons with amsoil and mobile1. There was talk about oil consumption every 7500 miles. I thought I would still change it every 3k? or should I change it every 7500?

on a side note, does anybody use amsoil and where can it be bought from?

every 3k = a way for dealers to get easy money

every 7,500k = what the actual manual says

every 5,000 = when i change my oil

I change it every 9k... There's no reason to change it before 7500 unless you're not daily driving it or you have something wrong with your engine.

Every 9k????????? isn't that way TOO long?

I understand every 5k for daily driver.. heard that mutiple times...
but 9k is new to me... that'll be one heaven car to drive. 10 oil changes for 100,000 miles?

Yep, I get my oil tested as well. I could VERY easily go to 12k+ miles if I wanted to. But I choose to have the oil go though one hot/cold season so it's usually 7-9 months which in my case ends up being 6-9k miles. For those of you who are changing synthetic oil every 3k you're wasting your money.. a lot of money. You might as well wait til 6k and send in your oil to get tested, you'll find that you've still got a TON of life left in your oil. Our engines just aren't that hard on oil when running properly.

I'd recommend changing your oil at the earliest (assuming it's a daily driver that's running well) at 7500 miles. Even at this point it's mainly to change the oil filter and not the oil. Get the oil tested, see if you have high particulate matter, if you don't go higher. I know I can run a little bit longer due to my oversided oil filter however, though it doens't hurt that I've also gotten my oil tested. Think it out, the oil test costs $20. You save that much by not changing the oil once. I'm going 3x longer than some of you... You do the math.

9K? Wow! Well if you don't see any problems when you have it tested, rock on I guess. The oil is really not what you should worry about. It's the filter, I didn't know a filter would still be very efficient at 9k.

same as TimeRacer here. I change mine on average of 7-8.5k. Most people dont have time to do the easy and unnessary 3k.

If you are concerned about the filter, you can always change it out without changing out the oil.

Long drain intervals are only viable for engines that don't burn oil.

Preludes burn oil, thereby contaminating via increased blow-by far greater and sooner. Why waste money on syn to get longer life that you can't really use in this case? Just use dino and change it every 3K.

If you get your oil tested regularly you will be able to know how far you can push it. Just because you burn oil does not mean you should be changing your oil out at 3k.

Well shark, if your burning oil fast, checking your oil level shows that oil is decreasing at
an "abnormal rate", isn't it better to just change it, or at least fill it up before it runs without oil?

My lude has never done this, but first time changing oil after nitrous use.. I realized
I was burning oil. Ran only about 2000miles, and oil lever was pretty damn low.
(dipstick showing oil level was reaching only 1cm from the bottom of the stick..)

7500 miles... filter and oil.

Works like a champ, and you can use the dash indicator to remind you.

Even if you burn oil... you just top off and change the oil / filter at 7500 miles.

(In fact, if you burn oil there is NO reason to change the oil sooner. This is because as you top off the oil, you add more of the additive package into the exisiting oil... and that keeps the oil in really good condition.)

After a bunch of research I was able to determine that if you've got a good filter and you top off... it's really not an issue to change the oil every 7500 miles even if you burn a fair amount.

...and it's true that if you add oil, you're refreashing the additive package and extending the life of the oil...

The important thing is to get a REALLY good filter...

-Wix
- Champion Labs (with spring type by-pass valve)
- K&N
- Mobil 1
- any Japanese filter
- Fram x2

I change mines every 2500-3000 miles too. It helps when I get the mobil 1 oil and filter for free.
