Just bought 2000 Honda Prelude

Just bought a 2000 Honda Prelude. 80k miles on it, for $8500. Good deal? Car is in great shape, clean on the inside and outside. Previous owner only drove it 1500 miles/year

Rear rims are on the wrong sides.

Is it an auto or 5spd?

1500 miles each year for 11 years equals 16,500 miles not 80,000 miles btw.

It's an auto. Yeah it had 2 owners, but the one auctioned it or whatever had only driven it 1500 a year. I mean the car drives awesome though, I love the sound of the V Tec in it.

I'm sorry it's an auto. Welcome to the horror show. Don't use your sport shift mode if you want it to last a bit longer. Also add a bigger aux tranny oil cooler.

Should have done some research though and bought a 5spd Lude or if it had to be auto, you should have bought something other than a 5th gen Lude sorry to say.

Yes it is low mileage and may be clean but the fact remains it is an auto. You way over paid personally because it is an auto. Best of luck with it though.

Yeah I had heard that the trans is pretty bad in em, but I figured i'd roll the dice.

Change the trans fluid right away and keep changing it at least every 20k which is 10k sooner than recommended and it should last. The final 2 years didn't have as many problems as the earlier half, people here just get over dramatic about it.

Only use Honda ATF btw, aftermarket fluids are too thick, can take anywhere from 3-4qts depending on how long you let it drain. Best to change it after the car has just been ran for a bit.

EDIT: If you don't reach 20k in 3 years then change it every 3 years.

Never do a tranny flush, just drain and fills. I'd add a magnetic drain plug too.

As for the later models being "better", I find that false. 97 was the only year not covered by the extended warranty on the tranny. At this point, I believe only a few 01's are still covered and that is it as too much time has passed for the others.

yeah I had all the standard maintenance done. The timing belt, water pump, trans fluids, oil change. Had a 2nd sensor shift go but that was a pretty easy fix. So now outside of all the standard oil changes and stuff, and 2 new tires within the next year the Prelude should be good to go for a long time

It would be a good deal if it was a 5 speed.

Well..Blue Book puts it @ aprox ~$7,500 in "Good" Condition. Lets hope that "Auto-Tragic" doesn't blow up on you.

Who said anything about a flush when most people who know anything about Honda's knows it's the worst thing for it? All Honda auto transmissions have magnetic drain plugs btw, 5 speeds don't need it since there are 2 large magnets in the case.

Yep, I can attest to the fact that using the sport shift could bring your tranny to an early demise. I never used it to try and launch from a dead start like a 5 speed - I only used it when I wanted to wind it up to 7100-7200 rpm before the shift. But mine ran pefectly until about 165k miles before it gave a hint of a problem. So who knows. Sure I wished it had been a stick, but I wanted a new one.

Good luck with your new ride!

I can't imagine spending $8500 on a car that's 11 years old. Most preludes in my area go for about 4-6k. Anyways, I wish you the best for your car and your tranny.

Sorry. Was trying to help out the OP ashe didn't know about the auto tranny so maybe, just maybe ,he didn't know your not supposed to flush it. Maybe he likes to go to Jiffy Lube for all we know and will buy any service they try to sell them.

True?

False. I have a mechanic who does most of my work, I don't use jiffy lube or snappy lube, no need to. I've heard nothing but horror stories about them. But yes, Preludes are fairly expensive here.

Good luck with your over-priced, about-to-die POS. You're going to pay for your mechanic's car.
