JDM 5th gen trannys?

Hi all,

I have a 97 base 5speed lude, and my transmission went out... (whoever had the car before me beat the SH1T out of it)... so I ordered a used one from ASAP Motors (based out of Texas), and had it installed here locally (in Utah), and now, my gears are really, I mean REALLY tall.

Obviously its not the same transmission the car normally comes with.

Example: 1st gear used to go to about 35, now it goes to 40.
2nd gear used to go to about 64, now it goes to 76.
3rd gear used to go to about 94, it goes to about 110 now...

I have no idea how fast 4th and 5th go now.

Needless to say, my lude is quite a bit slower.

Does this sound like an h23 transmission (The Prelude SI in Japan has an h23), or is it possible that its a Type S transmission? I didn't think the H22A had different transmissions that were used that had that much different gear ratios.. I just thought there was one other tranny, the one the 4th gen VTEC lude had.

I'm trying to figure out if I should call up the place and complain that they sent me the wrong transmission... or what? I know I ordered a 97 H22A tranny, and this tranny is definitely not even close to what my old one was.

Hellooooo
Is it possible that the gears for the JDM cars are just a lot taller, to produce better fuel economy and less emissions, or what?
Anyone know?

If the gearing is taller, it sounds like you were unfortunately given a tranny for a DOHC H23a.

The 5th gen 5spds in Japan have the same gearing as the 5th gens in the US. And the 4th gen H22a tranny would have tighter gearing.

Okay, I called up the dealer, and they said that the model numbers for US prelude 5 speed trannies are:
M2U4 (for the SH tranny)
M2Y4 (base tranny)

I haven't been able to get under my car yet in order to see what model number the tranny I have in there is, but I plan to do that this afternoon after work.

If anyone with a JDM 5g base prelude equivalent (I think a JDM Prelude SiR or SiR S Spec is equivalent? Not sure...) happens to know the model number of their transmission, please let me know! I am pretty sure that the M2Y4 is used on those JDM H22A4 engines too.

Thanks a lot!

Well one thing I know is that the USDM manual tranny for the 5th gen is exactly the same as a JDM 5th gen maunal tranny as far as gearing goes. I know someone said it above but I'm just reconfirming. If you got a H23A tranny from a 4th gen than are you going to try to get your money back? What about the labor?

your tranny should be stamped right next to where your engine code is, on the transmission of course.

Okay, I got under my car and checked out the trannie.. sure enough, its a P series tranny... from a JDM accord EX probably. I haven't been able to figure it out exactly yet, because nobody has JDM transmission model numbers

Does anyone know the model number for a JDM Prelude SiR tranny? The SiR is equivalent to our base model prelude here in the US.

It should be some M*** number.
