Interior air filter question

I decided to try the interior air filter addition to my '98 base. I cut out the plastic covering the filter location and was surprised to not find all the debris mentioned by others(clean living?). I did find a large metal filter to the left of the cut-out. Can this be easily removed(or does it need to be) for cleaning before putting in the filter? Thanks!!

wouldn't you not have debris like some of us, because you do not have a filter to catch it? how would your filters be clogged and nasty when you do not have them? your debris just gets blown out in the vents.

Not sure that I understand your post. I said that there is a piece to the left of where the filter element sits. I just want a name for this piece. I'm sorry that I don't have any debris floating around. Never said anything about clogged filters;just asked if the piece(radiator sort of look) is a 97-98 style filter or what.
