intake or air filter?

Somebody told me the other day that it is not worth getting a cold air intake on the 5th gen lude. he said to just go ahead and get a filter. given the price gap, i am inclined to do this. but it just doesnt sound right to me. there's more to an intake than the filter, the shape and material of the intake are also important.

im right, right?

The AEM CAI is going to get more gains than just the K&N Filter.

With an AEM CAI, you will loose low end but gain high end performance. That is what I have read anyway.

I am also going to be getting a AEM cold air intake. Suppose to gain 9hp.

Also, get an exhaust to go with it... its will breath better with the intake, let it push the exhaust out more freely with a performance system

Correct, these gains are NOT huge though...

I would say a happy medium (for torque/horsepower gains/loses) would be to remove the resonator in the stock airbox and add a K&N.

i have heard numerous opinions, myself i just have a drop in k & N because i did not want to lose the low end torque and did not want to worry about hitting a puddle and saying good bye to my prelude. It is not worth it to remove your resonator, the air box was designed specifically to put in the most amount of air to your engine

intake is my only mod.. I noticed a little kick for about the first week i had the AEM CAI. After that, i didn't really notice it much, but since the installation required the removal of the resonator, my car sounds a lot throatier.

That seems a little optimistic for just an intake.

Well this is because you get used to the power of it.

ummmm i had an intake, it was loud, i took it off and pulled all the resonator crap out, there is a lot to it, and put a drop in k&n, i like it better, still have some bottom end, gained a little at the top i believe.

"It is not worth it to remove your resonator, the air box was designed specifically to put in the most amount of air to your engine"

i myself have taken out the intake resonator and have seen how much more restrictive the resonator makes the stock intake...the opening for the intake is actually facing the "ceiling" of the bumper on the inside...kinda hard to explain but imagine sticking the intake tube close to a wall....how is that "designed specifically to put in the most amount of air to your engine'?

once you remove the resonator it would seem that air would flow much more easily into the engine. and if you take a look underneath the car, there is a bunch of plastic protection shields. right underneath where the air is supposed to enter the intake, there are little slots that i'm guessing work as vents where the air enters...

that's what gave me the idea to remove the black plastic pieces right underneath the parking lights to allow the air to "rush into" the area right beneath the intake. probably won't make much of a difference but at least in theory it's better for the car.

o...and pertaining to the question...

i've read somewhere that replacing the stock intake box with an underhood aftermarket intake will actually decrease the car's performance. maybe it was an article from hondaprelude.com?

but definately, it's been proven that the cold air intake will better your car's performance...

I've got an under hood intake and I'm happy with it. Right now I'm looking at building a custom heatshield to minimize temperatures.
