idle surge after timing belt

I just finished changing all the belts, seals, and water pump.

After everything was bolted back up I started the car. After the initial cold start engine started surging from 1K-3k rpm

I figured it was air in the cooling system or timing off. But I triple checked all the timing marks after rotating the crank.

I had the bleed valve open. Radiator cap open. Poured coolant in the reservoir as well as in the radiator. Held revs constant to 3K rpm but the fans don't turn on. Smoke started coming out of the radiator and bleed valve. Little bubbles of coolant squirted out of the valve but no stream. At this point valve cover got really hot and I shut her down.

Never had a problem with the thermostat not opening before the install so I need your help guys.

Did you fill the radiator? Antifreeze should be up to the neck while running.

Yes, the radiator is filled up. Some actually spills when the idle surges up and down.

Thanks for the help. I got the surging to stop. But once I revved it up a little the car immediately died. Now it is struggling to start up. When I give it some gas in order for it to start there's belt squeal.

Timing belt too loose?

Car does not idle anymore. It starts, struggles, dies.

Sounds like the timing is off now. If it is then you will probably need new valves. I think H22s are interference engines.

It was off a tooth on the intake cam. Adjusted it. Now it idles perfect. However, the engine is alot louder now. It sort of sounds like a really loud exhaust leak(hole in exhaust) with an increase in cabin vibration.

I took everything apart again to recheck timing. Everything lined up perfect on the timing belt side as well as the balance belt side. I made sure to stick an allen key in the service port to lock in the rear balance shaft pulley.

The car was definitely quieter before I worked on it.

Any ideas?

After a 15minute drive.

ECT is at 206deg
Idle RPM at 750

Not sure if the temp sensor is correct valve cover gets really hot and the gauge is right at the middle. Never seen it go above it.

car has 180K miles

Engine temp is ok.

The front balancer might have turned. The line on the front balancer needs to line up also it it will still vibrate.

thanks for the suggestions. Would a balance shaft cause my engine to be louder? Sort of like an exhaust drone as rpm go higher. I thought they just reduce vibrations.

You have to align the rear balance shaft, while doing the t belt change

Does it sound like valve ticking. I mean, you did have the cam off by 1 tooth. Your best bet is a leak down test.

No unusual valve ticking. The engine just drones and vibrates at low speeds until it's cruising at ~65-70mph.

It's probably the balance shafts not timed right. I used an allen key for the rear balance shaft to lock it in place but maybe it's still off. I'll recheck this weekend.

Vibrations are finally gone. It was the rear balance shaft not timed correctly.

However, now there's a womp womp womp sound coming from the timing belt area as well as a slight whine while driving.

I installed a manual tensioner. I'll try loosening the bolt from the outside and retighten it.

Here's a clip I took of the sound. You can hear it starting at :20 where I give it little blips of throttle.
