When I hit age 30 I'm getting a SUV don't know what kind yet. Why the SUV? So I can go anywhere anytime.

just for clairification I was making a quote from someone else and the context for which I ment it to be took was that I couldn't see MYSELF driving a modded prelude when I'm thirty... considering how much I want an M3 now...

yes, I was aware in the context you were speaking. But I took out the quotes, because it's relevant to a lot of us. I'm only 20 now...but thinking about it, that statement is very true...and as much as I love my Prelude, I'm not sure that I could see myself driving this car of mine if I was 30...

A little has to be said about the prestige of owning a BMW as well...
Like anything else its a status symbol.. and who knows... maybe when I do decide its time to move on BMW will have given us a more heafty powerplant for the price tag... and in there own way, BMW are easy to mod as well...

One of the Tuner shops here in Calgary is owned by three guys that all drive Beemers (two older M's and one with out badges... guessing a 330ci) but a simple chip gets them pretty good gains, where we would have to move to a hondata or something

I don't understand the BMW == status thing. Whenever I head to a big city, they're common and don't stand out a whole lot.. especially the cheap ones like the 330. The only one that's impressive is the M3, and it's $. Anything mercedes puts out below 100k is slow for the money. If you want real status, get a NSX . If you want absolute speed, get a Mustang Cobra and spend $10k upgrading it, and eat anything on the road for lunch.

That's just me, though *shrug*. When the time comes for a "responsible" car, I'll get a Acura Type-S or Maxima and put the difference between that and the BMW into my project car .

I think a new M3 is around $50k + whatever rapage the dealer wants to put you through. $60k would come close to getting a S2000 AND a Acura. I know what I'd rather have on an AutoX course...

Just my 0.02, everyone's different.. I pick a car because it's fun to drive and race, not because of the badge on the front.

Steve

I totally agree with the fun to drive thing but I think we're all getting hung up on the badge... BMW has quite a history of heavy involvement of Racing... further more...

(keep in mind all prices are in CAD)

The 330ci has a 3.0L 225hp engine for $48,000

The NSX has a 3.2L 290hp engine for $141,017

The Cobra has a 5.4 390hp engine for $87,163

That leaves a difference of $93,017 and $39,163 respectively...

you could do some pretty serious **** (thing GT) with 93 large in a bmw, heck... you can buy an LT1 engine for less than 40 grand.

Is BMW pricey? And how!
Is it worth it? who knows..

note M3 = $73,500 with 333 betcha $20k would get you past the cobras 390

just so everyone knows, I've decided to keep my lude for a while... it just makes me too happy to give up just yet...

as for the previous post, I'm not trying to raise hackles, just saying that we might be overlooking the benefits due to a reputation (good or bad)

Personally I don't believe that BMW is just a name. I've been reading Car & Driver and Road & Track most of my life and they've always held BMWs in very high esteem. In fact, every time they have luxury sedan comparisons, they openly admit that the BMW is favored to win.

i love my prelude but show me a Honda car that can be compared to the luxury u get in a BMW, Benz, or even an AUDI with the available power?...none!!

BMW has power...look at the GT races...BMW wins all of them!!!

As for Benz, they have the AMG, and those are hella fast cars...S55, E55, ML55, CL55, C32, and the SLK32...all fast and still luxurious(sp?) cars!!!

oh one more thing too...y did u by a Honda..for the badge and the feel...like most ppl (who know anything about a car...not status quo) who buy luxury cars.

Juss my .02 cents !!

I'm in the same boat. I paid off the Prelude very quickly and while I love it I keep looking at it as more of a really nice down payment on something else, than as the car I'll be driving for the next five years. I'm not sure if I'd do the 330. It's bigger, definitely quicker but as well as it handles I like the Prelude's behavior at the limits a little more. The M3 is just too expensive. The wait and markup are horrible.

I've actually been thinking a lot about the SLK32. Auto only but damn fast, convertible hardtop, and it looks cool. And you can actually get those for a reasonable price.
