How to check compression on my car..

Is it fairly simple to check compression on my car...or should I take it to a shop? Also, how much does it normally cost? My 97 lude has about 95000 miles on it....any reccomendations on what to change out....ie head gasket....besides the timing belt and normal maintenance repairs....
