Horrid Noises

I have some issues that nobody can seem to understand.

it sounds like my engine is making a horrible grumbling/grinding noise at lower rpms (1500-2800 rpm)

this sound is also accompanied by metal on metal sounds.

This wont happen until my car has been warmed up ( after about 3-5 minutes of driving) my rpm idle is a llittle below 500 RPM which i know is low, but the dealer didnt seem to think so.

the noises are worse when it is raining out :S.... this again made no sense to the dealer.

The dealer recently did a rebuild, and I am trying to get a new motor out of them as i bought a warranty on my car. As it is not clear what will happen there, i am trying to figure out why this is happening.

I can take the car out of gear and rev the motor lightly (same sounds happen so i dont think its my transmission) (by out of gear i mean push clutch down, and slide gearbox out of gear, this is not an auto tranny)

if anyone has had these or similar issues, please let me know.

p.s. car is a 2001 SE model, with aftermarket I/H/E (as for the worse sound in the rain, i have checked the intake and it is not soaked or have any water on it, so it is not as easy as it sucking in water)

Thank you guys (and girls) for all your help!

Hey, Sorry cant get a video, although it would be hard to pic out the noise unless you were there. But i can either be stopped, and just rev the engine a bit, or be driving slowly and hear it. It all depends on RPM's

I have the exact same problem with my 97 fifth gen SH. I have the grumbling / metal on metal noises only at lower rpms (2200 - 1200). I have no idea what may be causing it either but it sounds like it may be something that could end up catastrophic. Let me know if you gain any insight.

Put the car on a lift and listen to the exhaust system. Sounds like a loose piece of heat shielding.

i almost am ready to say taht you catyltic converter is on its way out. Is sounds as if the platinum catalyst is almost decayed completly and may be rattling around as you drive and what not. Is there a loss of power or anyhting when you hear this noise? Can you tell if the noise is isolated to the engine, the tranny, the exhaust? Like where do think the noise is coming from? I knwo when my cat went i could hear like a weird rattle, then my cel came on and threw a P0420, which means my cat is ineffiecient. I dunno just a thought though, perhapos something you should check on?

It's def not the tranny, as it makes this noise when I
take it out if gear, but again, takes about 5 mins of driving before it starts. Then I can sit and rev lightly to hear the noises. Getting the exhaust system inspected tommorow. Thanks for the advice guys!

Is your CEL on? That will tell you REAL quick if you have an engine malfunction. Like they said, could be heat shield rattles, could be a nasty cat, or maybe you think its worse than it is and it simply needs a valve adjustment. Key would be do identify where the sound seems to be the loudest. (I.e valve cover). Hope this helps.

Is it around the engine area? . If so could be your autotensioner / cambelt all that stuff around there. YouTube - 5th Gen Honda Prelude Engine Noise . Does it sound like that? if its that sound its the auto tensioner.

Hey, its not the autotensioner. I am pretty confident it is the cat, an i have ordered a new high flow cat. Is there anything i should be aware of with this? any extra parts needed for install?

Yeah?.. Heat shields are for gines.. You might need a new secondary o2 sensor. I had to replace mine as well as use a defouler.
