hondata coil pack retrofit

hondata coil pack retrofit has anyone done this to a prelude yet? i looked around a little and havent found any. what is the point of it, anyway? seems like the wire tuck freaks would be all about this mod just to clean up the bay but performance-wise is it really that big of a difference?

Looks super interesting especially since I have a S300 and it was the only thing I thought it couldn't really do was coil on plug. COP is more reliable than the old distributor with wires, cap and rotor that need servicing every so often, the coils are way lower maintenance and aren't so prone to failure. The main benefit is less misfires at high RPM and more powerful spark, no need to use any aftermarket coil, cap and wires to boost spark.

Only thing I'm curious about is if it would be possible to modify the AEM unit to work with this for a cleaner look but I guess you could gut the dizzy but keep the sensors needed then make some kinda cover.

AEM sells things called CDI pencil coils, which are COPs but you also need an Engine Position Module to replace the dizzy with AEM Ignition System Upgrades - Wideband O2 UEGO, Water/Methanol, Stand Alone Engine Management, Piggyback F/IC, Tru Boost Controller, Gauges, Automotive Performance Electronics

^I thought though that you had to be running an AEM system with it though?

Also only lists for B series and costs a good deal more though it does include coils.

EDIT: Even figuring in the cost of coils from Honda the Hondata solution is much cheaper.

the aem EPM works with other coil pack setups, like okada. If you look in the honda tuning for nov '11, i think you will see an h22a4 equipped with the aem epm and okada COP setup. Its great on engines that are N/A and spin upwards of 10k.

ok so the benefit to this is each spark plug has its own coil, allowing each one time to rest, for a more reliable and powerful spark, correct? if still never seen anyone around here running one on a prelude so it makes me wonder why, people just arent already running hondata?

also i have hks twin ignition amplifier, which im pretty sure uses the stock coil but just gives it more charge, for basically the same effect? if i didnt have the hks already installed i would probably put this in place but i was just hoping to find any kind of information from someone who has this setup on a prelude...

It cost a pretty penny and most will never benefit from doing the upgrade. Mostly only see high rev or heavily modified motors running them. I replace my cap and button every other oil change or if I've driven alot of highway miles ill notice a slight chop at idle.

I've seen plenty of people doing COP set ups, just go over to honda-tech.

Replacing the cap and rotor sounds pretty pointless to do every other oil change unless you're running some super cheapo parts from the auto store. COP would eliminate all that maintenance, you also get way better timing at high RPM, no missfires or weak spark.

To me the upgrade sounds pretty cheap for what you get since I work at the stealership and can get the coil packs for super cheap with employee discount.

Not every oil Chang lol maybe every other depending on how its been driven. This month I've driven from Nashville to Columbus 3 times. Moving on a whim blows and trying to get a job ready when I move is a blotch.

^ i ahve a block getting sleeved for a boositie, that i plan on using COP on. I think it will be evry interesting as all teh research i have done into it shows great success. These systems help reduce the chance of misfire, knock and all sorts of other issues as they stabilize and strenghten the ignition process.

If I wasn't so set on picking up a 180SX then I'd probably have this on my list but something I'd probably do after I rebuild the head with Skunk2 goodies. Billet cap is looking nice.

Says right in the help file that no re-tune is necessary, looks like you just check 3 box's and you're good.
